Looks like we will have to take our elderly dog with us next summer to France. What do we need to do and when regards paperwork.

Your dog will need a rabies vaccination and, much nearer the time, an Animal Health Certificate.

The UK is no longer part of the Pet Passport scheme. To take a dog into the EU you will need a vet to issue an Animal Health Certificate. My advice would be to have a chat with your vet in plenty of time before travelling as he/she should know all the up to date information regarding documentation etc.

Which part of France are you intending to go to? It can be very hot in some parts in Summer, not good for any dog, especially an elder one.

Very good point. We went to the south a good few years ago in summer (won’t be doing that again) and could not get the van internal temperature down below 36C luckily we had a cool pad with us for the dog to lay on.
It’s definitely a point worth considering if taking an elderly dog.

As well as an AHC to get into France, you'll also need a Tapeworm treatment administered by a vet. The following is taken from https://www.gov.uk/bring-pet-to-great-britain today. I hope this helps.
