I changed to Smarty a few months ago with its 30gig and unlimited calls for £10 deal . Just tried to text France, it wouldn't go. On the web, it said they have changed the terms for EU from June 1st, it's 19p a minute and you have to buy an add on? Help line didn't help. Any ideas/help?

not sure if you need to turn on roaming data for it?

It's on. The apn is correct also. Thanks for the input though

Was looking at their deals yesterday. To phone/text to Europe needs an add-on. However, if you are in a European country, you can phone/Text within the country or UK without an add-on.
So you either have to go to France to send your text, or buy the add-on. The add-ons are available in multiples of £5 and don't expire.

We use Smarty but I won’t send a text at 19p. Couldn’t you use WhatsApp instead?
Can use Whats app I suppose, not sure that they're on it though

Thanks for that. I'll do that in the short term, will look for a more inclusive deal later.

I saw on the Smarty website that you had to update your sim settings before it would roam abroad from June 1st. Dont know if that may have something to do with it.

I changed to Smarty but lately the reception has been rubbish thinking of looking for another option was with tesco's for years with no problems don't know where to go next any suggestions are welcome only need UK at present

I'm on ID mobile. It seems like a good deal but I wouldn't be surprised if one company has started charging they all will on the cheaper deals.

Smarty is on the Three network, Tesco is on O2. Opinions vary about which of the main 'real' networks is best. I've used Vodafone for years and have mostly been OK with the service. The EE network is being expanded as they have the contract for the Emergency Services Network set to replace the current system sometime, and they need better than commercial coverage levels.

The problem was solved by purchasing a extra bundle or whatever their name is for it, costing £5 in the short term. Their terms changed on June 1st, thanks to Brexit. I was happy with Smarty up to that point, I guess it remains to be seen whether other companies will change their policies towards data usage now we are considered EU outsiders. I was with Tesco, wanted more data allowance while abroad so changed to Smarty so I could watch TV over the internet. It is now capped abroad by Smarty to 20gb or so, so might think again. Could find myself back with Tesco!

Try Sky. They piggy back on O2
They roll over unused data

Affordable mobiles currently have 100gb with Vodafone for £7 after cashback.

I was with Vodafone, but changed to smarty (worked perfect in new forest where Vodafone was useless) but is useless at home, so will now switch back, only drawback is 25gb when roaming.

The way I read that is if your in the uk and you want to text abroad then you need the out of plan add-on. However if your roaming in the EU then you can text / call to your hearts content but data is limited to 12GB per month, you dont need an out of plan add-on for that

Orange (EE) is being investigated in France after their emergency service numbers failed to work and a child died.

Last year we got 20Gb roaming in europe on 3 with smarty and £1 a Gb after that.
Now down to 12Gb and £1. We did find coverage in europe to be very good on the whole. So far, we haven't found a pay as you go data sim anywhere in europe - all require residency.
O2 now limit roaming to 63 days in 120 and then £4.60 a Gb. Not much use when your away 90 days. (well, when we can go the europe again)
Coming soon - Wi-fi via a big Yagi aerial...

I read about that. EE started as a combination of the old UK Orange and T Mobile networks, but is now owned by British Telecom and no longer part of Orange.

We’ve just bought a MEO data only sim in Portugal, €15 for 15 days, unlimited. No residency required, if that helps.

I've been very disappointed with Smarty simcard in France. Took 3 "chats" with Smarty to get it sorted and was advised next the APN which is below SSM to type internet+ssm and it worked but not enough coverage in France to be worth having.
