The cheapest one is your nose, if the van smells musty it is likely damp and if it smells too strongly of air fresheners it may be masking that. There are 2 main types of damp meter, the ones with pins to puncture the panel you are testing and the contact ones
The non intrusive pinless versions are by far the best, but more expensive by a long way
Lidl and Aldi often do a pin version under £10 which will give a basic indication, but will not show the percentage of moisture in the wood. Anything over 20% is an issue
