I'm new to it
Hello
I went down to my Mh yesterday to check all is ok and pay my yearly storage fee but when I opened the sunroof blind I found that the inner perspex of the sunroof had cracked all the way along ! Now unfortunately this is not a new thing on said window as when we bought it last July it had a small crack on the other side which had been halted and has not got any bigger. We thought that we could live with that as it didn't really show or spoil our enjoyment of the MH. But now a new one has appeared while in lockdown and cracked right across. The MH is a weinsburg but I suspect the sunroof is the same as on other mh.s but what i want to know is where could I (a) Maybe get it repaired or (b) get a new one fitted ? I don't know what has happened to make it do this as its not moved in 6 months, i can only assume heat or cold (Or both ) I can live with the crack if it could somehow be secured so the perspex does not fall out at any time (although depending on price I would like a new one) Just to add the outside glass is ok and it does not need replacing its just the inner thats cracked.

Thankyou I will give them a call.

You usually have to send them the broken one, from which they form a mould, to produce the replacement from. Only actually takes approx. a week. They match any tints, which is useful if it's of any age and has faded gradually over the years, cos the new one will match the ones either side of it - in our case, the large middle window at the front of our by then elderly but still good, Avondale Osprey caravan, think it was 30-ish.

I don't know if yours is similar to our roof light but ours say's not to fully close the reflective blind behind it if its sunny you're supposed to leave at least a 10cm gap presumably so it doesn't get too hot behind it. Might help if you didn't know.

That’s interesting and quite apt because we have just closed our blinds to cool the van down whilst parked up. I’m off down there now to open a gap 😀

Thankyou if we do get a new one fitted i will certainly do that in future.

Unfortunately I would not be able to take the old one out as i think its bonded in with the outer glass. It would have to be a professional job to remove the old and refit the new. I really need someone who can do the whole job not just make the replacement window.

If it is safe to leave it as it is then put some adhesive in the crack to stabilise it then make a feature by painting a picture on it using the crack as a lightening bolt ... you'd have your own mock 'stained glass' window then.

As for what's caused it ... it is more than likely due to a heat build up - hubby left an insulated pad on one of our roof-lights and when he took it off the other day to open it the silver covering on the pad had started to 'melt'! :Eeek:

Tbh Minxy G I fear that you are right as it has been left all through this hot spell with the blind fully closed. If we do manage to have it replaced I will then always leave it part open. It can’t really be anything else as the MH has not moved in over 4 months.

As you have said it is a perspex double glazed roof light. You need to undo the whole double glazed sheet and replace it, i.e. both "sides". Look around it for a makers name and number, as these are usually a standard fit and the whole double sheet can be bought from a dealer. Then search the internet to find who can sell them. Or, as others have said, send the whole unit to Eeco and they will make a new double glazed unit to replace it.

I would not be able to remove it myself so I would need the Mh taking to a garage to be professionally removed and then sent to have a new one made. I have contacted Eeco by email and am now just waiting for a reply. Thankyou all for your help.

Any decent motorhome dealer with a workshop should be able to do that for you. If you can find one that is open they can look at it, decide where to buy the replacement and fit it for you once it has been delivered. It will cost you a lot more than doing it yourself though.

I know but unfortunately its my only option. If it had been a window I would have done it myself but a large sunroof is a different prospect.

Just received this reply from Eeco, so its back to the drawing board:cry:

Many thanks for contacting us for a quotation.

Unfortunately, we do not have moulds for these types of windows

If you require any further assistance

Please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kindest regards.

I too have a Weinsberg.....contact a UK Weinsberg dealer and call or email them...I fear for you it won’t be cheap....my wife scorched the lower part of the swivel table with a gas stove doing some silver work and it cost nearly £400 to replace....and that was a small piece of wood. Good Luck!

I thought , which when I have them are usually dangerous, is it not covered by you insurance under 'glass replacement ' similar to windscreen cover?

Same has happened to me however I did have the sunblind up to prevent heat build up. Perhaps it's the age or the exceptional heat we had. I will let you know if I progress with a replacement.

So, have I got this right? A sunroof with the sunblind closed will be damaged by the sun?

The argument goes that heat gets trapped between the sunroof and blind causing an excess of heat build up. Like I said with mine the sunblind was up to prevent sagging during storage. So might not be the only cause.

the plastic windows are all covered here according to a dealer I spoke to some years ago No idea about rooflights though?

Yes the silver reflects it & it either cracks window or delaminates the 2 parts.
