Cite Europe

Hi i,m new to this. Please could you tell me what an FLT is ?

We shall really miss Cd'E. For us it was so convenient, arriving in time to do a bit of shopping and have something to eat then setting off the next morning. We travel towards the West. At this time of year campsites are closed. From other posts it appears the Sangatte aire is being used by long-term stayers. There are other aires on the coast but getting to them and then from them back on to the A16 means they are not as simple as staying at the Cd'E. We don't like Carrefour but do spend a good amount there, especially on our return. We have seen many motorhomers overnighting and a proportion of them will do likewise. We have never had any trouble.
It is sad that it has closed.

Seems extraordinary, given the number of customers they have, that Eurotunnel doesn’t find a patch of land, fence it off, and provide customers with these basic facilities.
It’s added costs and I know it’s not their core business....maybe they know they’ve got the van market sewn up versus ferries and so don’t have to try?
Would be interesting to see what proportion of their customers are Motorhomes I would think quite small and therefore not enough to warrant extra expenditure on services, personally I would prefer a discount rather than an aire.?

Similar for us. We do a late night crossing, up earlyish, bread, cheese shop etc then day one of our drive down to the French Alps for our ski holiday. On our return we arrive midday, bit of shopping and then Steak and Shake for dinner. We get the 6am train the next day and make our way back to Dorset. Really going to miss it.

Some new signs at Cote de Europe and a plastic chain to go across the entrance, hopefully just temporary

Not complaining about paying, but does anyone else think that the next thing that appears will be one of those camping carpark things opening up close by . :(

I think it was because of the travellers chaser, they even put the french shoppers off let alone motorhomers.... they’ve had to ban everyone otherwise they can claim discrimination.....

it might relax the rule again once they’ve gone from the Calais and sangate aires...

It's difficult to identify some 'Travellers' from any other type of traveller these days especially in motorhomes and don't these ' Travelers' have the same right to park where others are especially on free parking areas.

Legitimate travelers have their own parks with all facilities all over France, and can't use Aires with caravans but presumably with motorhomes they can park on any of them.

Sign up in store at customer services for the free Carrefour card. Lots of discounts on special offers and the bonus of a dedicated check out. :xThumb: . You can use it all around France but not in other countries. It also builds up cash on the card which you can spend in store against your shopping.

It's good that they're putting out signs stating the hours that vehicles are allowed to stay.

When we were moved on it was late - I'm unsure of the time but it was dark. Fortunately we hadn't had a drink but the couple in the van next to ours had. I'm not sure what they did as we moved off straight away.

Well, it looks official then - need to adjust our plans for January. First off try and get an earlier train so we can get a bit further into France.

It lives in my euros purse with the no fee credit card, my husband still cannot get to grips with different debit and credit cards let alone having a special card for overseas so I always have means of payment purse with me! :xsmile:

Ours are complex but we are trying to rationalise them. We have our Santander zero CC which I use for work expenses that gets cleared before we start spending abroad (one son has a card for when he takes our car abroad), they only allow you to draw half your limit in cash even if you pay it off as you go; we can also draw Euros in Spain commission free from our Santander 123 Current Account.; we have the Nationwide card which is Visa as we have been caught with only Mastercards (another son has that card for same reasons) which is through our current account; we have a Halifax Card in my name which like the others is paid in full by DD; we have a Halifax card in the wife's name - there was a £20 bonus to take it out 2 years ago which is not linked to a DD because you can then draw cash and pay if off immediately without interest. All are foreign commission free but are sometimes raided for UK use if we cannot find our UK Tesco cards. All very confusing especially as the Santander cards are both black although I can still use an older gold one until next month. So at the moment we have 7 different cards for use abroad. I can barely understand this but there is some logic to it or there was at sometime although our sons never know when to draw cash :)

You could say the same about any port ( or the Eurotunnel site) in the UK. None of these provide any form of overnight motorhome parking for their customers.
And why should they? Motorhomes are a very tiny part of their business.
In France there is alternate parking in dozens of aires within a few miles of Calais.
In the UK, there’s Canterbury Park and Ride and a couple of campsites, unless you want to park up in a side road.

I doubt anything would put French shoppers off. Cite Europe has a huge car park out the front for shoppers, I wouldn’t think any of them know or even care about what happens in the car park used for motorhome parking.
