In the past, when changing a vehicle, I've found it's always been fairly straightforward to contact your current insurer and arrange for cover for your existing vehicle to be switched to your new vehicle for the remaining life of the policy. This invariably involves a charge to cover any adjustment in premium for the different vehicle and an admin charge - fair enough.
I know my following experience relates to cars rather than motorhomes but I'd imagine the same problem for the latter could well arise.
So - I was looking to replace my Skoda Yeti with a newer Suzuki Vitara and called my insurers (RAC) to arrange the switch. Despite the two vehicles being in very similar Insurance Groups, RAC said their underwriters were not prepared to switch cover. I might add that I have had no accidents, claims, driving endorsements or any other "impediment" for at least 20 years! They could not (or would not) provide a reason - maybe it's an age thing - I'm 67! They said the only option was to take out a fresh policy with them which would cost about £450 - this dwarfed my current premium of £167 - ridiculous!
In the end I reverted to my usual practice of checking with comparison websites and got the premium down to about £255 but of course having to arrange cover quickly prevented me from getting the best price.
I think this shows how shoddily a supposedly reputable company like the RAC can behave and I thought it worth pointing out to Funsters that it seems your current insurer won't necessarily be prepared to switch cover as you might expect them to when you change a vehicle.....
