In the past, when changing a vehicle, I've found it's always been fairly straightforward to contact your current insurer and arrange for cover for your existing vehicle to be switched to your new vehicle for the remaining life of the policy. This invariably involves a charge to cover any adjustment in premium for the different vehicle and an admin charge - fair enough.

I know my following experience relates to cars rather than motorhomes but I'd imagine the same problem for the latter could well arise.

So - I was looking to replace my Skoda Yeti with a newer Suzuki Vitara and called my insurers (RAC) to arrange the switch. Despite the two vehicles being in very similar Insurance Groups, RAC said their underwriters were not prepared to switch cover. I might add that I have had no accidents, claims, driving endorsements or any other "impediment" for at least 20 years! They could not (or would not) provide a reason - maybe it's an age thing - I'm 67! They said the only option was to take out a fresh policy with them which would cost about £450 - this dwarfed my current premium of £167 - ridiculous!

In the end I reverted to my usual practice of checking with comparison websites and got the premium down to about £255 but of course having to arrange cover quickly prevented me from getting the best price.

I think this shows how shoddily a supposedly reputable company like the RAC can behave and I thought it worth pointing out to Funsters that it seems your current insurer won't necessarily be prepared to switch cover as you might expect them to when you change a vehicle.....

RAC Insurance is operated by Aviva and has little to do with the RAC. Ditto the AA are operated by Allianz.

Don't trust them. End of story.

I don't even trust the comparison sites year to year. They seem to have a deal where they don't give you the best deal year on year. I have now resorted to create a new email address and account before requesting a new quote.

They are all out to get what they can unless you nail them down as hard as you can sadly :(

Had the same problem in July last year when I swapped the motorhome when the NFU policy was two or three months old. They wouldn’t cover the new motorhome, despite me being with them for a few years with no claim history at all, except for a coachbuilt Ducato windscreen 10 years ago. I think it was down to the value of the motorhome.

In fairness, they gave me a pro-rata refund and I insured elsewhere. I’ll try NFU again at renewal when the value has dropped a bit.

NFu are great. They do what you want. Change car mid policy. And no charges whatsoever. I do it often as I keep changing my plaything cars. 🌟👍🥃

NFU - are not insuring new clients where value is over £80 or £100K. Sorry I can't recall the exact number that my agent mentioned at my last renewal.

I’ve used Grove & Dean for the last few years. They are brokers, not insurers, and seem to come up with the best overall deal, as compared with the comparison website results.

Almost everytime i have bought a new vehicle i have gone with a different insurance co.
So cancel policy of sold vehicle and insure new vehicle with new insurancy co.
And the new policy is nearly always from a comparison site.
