We are off to Bristol at the weekend. I was already thinking it was a rip off at £45 per night for 2 people. Only going because its where I grew up and the site is shutting soon.

Just received an email to say they are increasing prices due to electricity costs. not only that - they are asking us not to use the electricity as much as possible!!! (please use your solar instead!)

Back to CL sites in future.

£45 for 1 night ?
Is that non member price
We’re booked on a popular full facility C&MC site over Easter on the coast and not paying anywhere near that sort of price

As said above - yes that was the price. Yes members too. With the increase it will be more than that now.

Is there a CL in Bristol City centre ???

Not that I am aware. I meant for camping in general. For Bristol I'll just book into a nice hotel instead!!!

We’re booked-in for 5 nights at Brecon C&MC site at the end of this month - the price has gone up by £6 in total, so not much in the greater scheme of things……. (y)

Baltic Wharf is expensive compared with other sites. Guess it’s folk getting the experience before it closes. It’s hard to get pitches as well so we have declined to visit.

We have a tour of the Bombay Gin Distillery on Sunday.

Decided to make a weekend of it and looked at the nearest club site £30 a night can't arrive until after 1pm on Friday must depart by 12 etc.

Found a nice little CL site 6 miles away arrive on Friday when you want stay as long as you require on the Sunday £15 per night inc electric.

The easiest way is to vote with your feet. The main site was not full so its a loss for them and I feel better for it. The Club needs to concentrate on the core instead of diversification and putting profits into Glamping etc and if they wish to save electric.

Turn some bl***y lights off. Its not rocket science.

Please explain where the money goes then!
It is not a non profit organisation, it is run as a commercial operation for the benefit of members.
No dividends are paid, profits are re invested for the benefit of members.
Three members of the 'Top Table' turned up for a CC (it was then) 'Special Rally' to celebrate a Counties 3000th Rally.
They each turned up with a Range Rover Vogue towing a Carlight Caravan.

What are the odds on that combination occurring?

a bed and breakfast starts to look better value.

Average B&B in say Chester is around £85, and rather than your own, your sleeping in someone else's dirt. If B&Bs were ¼ of the price of a pitch, I'd still stay in my van.

Nearest B&b we could find to Baltic Wharf (we use it for visiting son) is £72.50 - it's ok but cramped, over a pub, and generally fully booked. As for Airbnb prices in Bristol, they've gone through the roof. And I strongly suspect that CL owners are being given a "nudge" by CMC to set prices high when approved - recent trip to Northumberland we found average was £25. Demand for sites and B&b has driven prices up, before recent cost hikes on fuel even kick in.

The thought of other people's sweat and bodily fluids seeping out of b&b and hotel mattresses is one reason we got a van.
Back on the original subject the c&mc will charge what the market will bear. Someone has to keep the management in their beer and ciggies (or should I say champagne brandy and cigars)

Baltic Wharf has been closing down for the last 12 years that I know of 😂

It's not as bad as it sounds. We are missing a lot of independent sites that have sold to build houses, or are now full of statics. This does give the two big clubs the space to operate a duopoly and can put prices up at will.

However the UK's CL network is growing really fast. Motorhomefun have exempted 22 this year just in Scotland, and we are just one of a number of exempting organisations.

Already we have French people telling us how good our CL system is, a few more years, a few more enlightened councils and we'll see French camping cars sitting in their dusty Aires waxing lyrical about the superb camping facilities they have over there in the UK. (y)

Spent our 1st ever Christmas, and a couple after in the van at Baltic Wharf CMC site, apart from the river taxi not running on Boxing day, we had a great time before heading off up north to the Fun New Years Bash.
Things I remember most about our last visit:
Great central position to visit town centre.
River Taxis were great to hop on hop off at various stages.
not so good bits:
At least 6 empty, no show pitches.
Most that had awnings out, kept them heated with fan heaters to keep the dogs warm.
1st time I ever saw 4/5 dogs in one van, cooped up all day, only short walks morning & evenings.
I think it was around £43 a night 3/4 years back over Christmas:unsure: and you were lucky to get a pitch if you didnt book next year, as you left, as was offered to us each time we went.

I am sure it will be missed by many, I dont think The CMC have secured an alternative site in Bristol as yet.

No - they did have a site lined up but it's been turned down on planning grounds after being called in. Safety issue with flooding because of the river. I've seen no news yet of what, if anything, they plan now.

Vehicles for preview and evaluation perhaps.

I think there is still controversy over the proposed site ate the old police horse centre. Something about flooding!

We love(d) Baltic Wharf for all the facilities nearby.

Nah! The vehicles were new (ish) but not new. The Caravans were not new in terms of 'just off the line'. (there wasn't a line, they were bespoke)

In the US there are not enough pitches to go around. The rise of van living and the general rise in RV ownership compound the problem. One thing that has come about from this is more sites every week are jumping on to the 10-year-rule. This means, your van must be under ten years old or you can't book a pitch! This keeps out what they see as riff-raff and makes their sites more attractive. What a shitty rule! Let's hope our two big clubs don't look across the pond for inspiration. 😲
