Hi.

How 'safe' is it to camp near Calais?

Have you used the Camping Car Aire, and was it okay?

Or maybe the Campsite?

Has there been any problems with clandestines, locals, police etc?

Would 25 miles away be a better option?

Any recommendations?

We hope to stay there for a few nights before getting the 9.20am train home.

Many thanks.

If you prefer a campsite, I recommend the Camping Saint Louis at Autingues, about 30 minutes drive from the ferry / Chunnel. Never saw a migrant in that area or along the short drive to Calais.

A very calm location, modern facilities, and handy snack bar on site. Friendly staff. In 2019 it was ACSI 16 Euros per night inc. electric.

It's best not to stay in Calais. We usually stop with about 45 mins drive to the tunnel. Stop overnight there to get the crossing first thing next day.

I would recommend the excellent campsite at Guines

We stopped at the very secure new Aire in Calais last year . No problems but 10€ per 24 hour's.
We stayed at the free Aire at Sangatt on the way back, again no problems

Just like Stealaway we stopped at the new Calais Aire in October last year. It felt very safe, barrier entry, high secure fencing, well lit so we will stay again in two weeks time.

We have avoided staying in Calais for the last few years because of security concerns but are now quite happy to use the new Aire.

If you want a commercial site within easy reach of Calais, Chateau de Gandspette at Eperleques is excellent as is the site at Guines, La Bien Assise. There are also numerous smaller sites in the general area.

We stop off at Camping Municipal L’Olympic, Wimereux for a good nights sleep before a 30 min drive to the Eurotunnel. It’s also very convenient to get to the hypermarché just north of Boulogne.

This is very interesting, thank you.

And thank you everyone for your input.

We used the Aire at Wissant once and would use it again. Usually full of 'surfers' over a weekend, so not guaranteed to get a park up! Short walk to the beach and into the town.

Another vote for Chateau de Gandspette at Eperleques we generally have a couple of nights there, visit the local vet with the dogs, although I think he may have retired, and we normally have a walk around Boulogne and lunch in the old town. Not the cheapest place to stay but very relaxing after a long drive. Oh and the pizzas are good as well 😉

Different Port, same concern.

Arriving at Caen on the afternoon ferry from Portsmouth which arrives at 9.30pm, our default stop is a right turn at the first set of lights and drive 3 mls. to Lion sur Mare
Rue du General Gallieni.
Coords N49. 30174 W0. 31316

Its a car park but vans are allowed bet. 8.00pm and 10.00am.
V Quiet.

We used to use the Aire at Wissant great little beach but there have been reports of a number of crossings being made from that area, but 5 mins up the hill with great views over the channel is the Ferme L'horloge.
