Hi after years of doing the going abroad thing its about time i put a bit back into our own country. Im planning on buying a campervan but not quite sure what to do regarding insurance.
Before i can get insured for a campervan does the details on the v5 have to be as a camper. If its not on the v5 as a camper as the conversion doesnt quite meet the criteria, will the insurance still have to be arranged as a run of the mill commercial van, so confusing.
Im looking but have not yet made a purchase for my camper so any tips would be appreciated.
Cheers.

Hi - had a vw crafter conversion last year and was not listed as a Campervan on the V5. I researched and also had it confirmed by Adrian Flux that it does not need to state this on the V5. However be mindful of the value etc. Of the van when insuring i.e my crafter was insured and fixed contents listed with Adrian Flux to a valuation of £50,000 otherwise some insurers will just assume its a panel van etc.

I have converted a peugeot boxer to a campervan, the DVLA changed the description on the V5 to van with windows, got a reasonable deal with Adrian Flux

I have my driving school insurance with adrian flux so il give them a ring. Any idea what prices id be looking at, i know it will all depend on vehicle ect but just a rough idea would be gteat.

Adrian Flux insurance covered our conversion from van to camper we updated them when more value items were added took about 12 weeks and we continued using the van on a daily basis

If you run a driving school, apparently it will be loaded, or so I was told. Typical cost would be around £400, but of course depends on postcode and value etc

Many insurers will offer cover as you build but need proof of the work being done including photos

I bought a van to be converted...contacted Lifesure Ins and they insure the bare van as motor caravan on the proviso the conversion was completed within (If I remember correctly) 90 days. Was done professionally so this did not cause any issues.
When completed inform Lifesure and send v5 away.
Give them a ring.. they are very helpful.
EDIT...
Incidently Lifesure were once known as Motor Caravan Insurance Agency MCIA and they still predominately deal with Motor Caravan Insurance.

I paid £395 from Adrian Flux. No conversion time limit.

loaded, as in higher insurance premium. A friend and neighbour was telling me that as he is a self employed driving instructor, his insurance on his private car is more expensive and this is normal. Apply for insurance and the ask your profession to determine the risk
