Best streaming service

Hi

We are contemplating paying for ONE such service - rather grumpily! Over the past few years we stopped getting the Saturday paper to see the weeks TV and indeed watching so much “live” TV.

We enjoy the crime fiction series on both BBC and ITV but do not much enjoy violence.

Can you recommend one and help us understand why you recommend it? Thank you
 
I don't watch any of them, but would be interested in the views of those who do.
 
We’re like you - only pay for 1. We chose Netflix but currently watching Scandal on 4 which is free (but advert-filled).
 
We find we are watching more on Netflix now, programing has improved over the last couple years.
Not sure if I would be so keen if I had to pay for it, we have a profile on our daughters account.

Yeah I had a profile on my daughter’s Netflix account until recently. Netflix cut my link off as detected not on same household - so had to get my own. I use it along with Amazon Prime which we have via my wife’s Amazon account. Both of these offer a huge range of choices

Most of the main streaming services do monthly payments. An annual contract offers a discount on the monthly amount. But go monthly and no obligation to renew. So each month change to another and keep rotating when you get bored of the line up.

Yes I'd head they have cut off profiles not in the same house in the UK. Oue daughter lives in Bangkok although they threatened to do it there they haven't yet and she only pays £3.75 a month for their top service, they just reduced the price it was about £4.
We log onto it and so does our other daughter.

This works, I think, for the big two but I was looking at Now and it was a 6 month minimum subscription. So I didn’t.
 
We recently cancelled Netflix, we have Prime and have just signed up for a year of Paramount plus, half price for £34. We also have a couple of weeks left of Now movies we got 3 months for £1 a month last year . We may go back to Netflix they keep messaging with the basic service at under £5 a month but we also download to an old phone to play on the TV when we're away and the basic Netflix doesn't allow that so not sure.

I had the same problem with Netflix
 
We mix between prime, netflix and disney+. Depends what's on and what we've seen. Probably change every few months to keep the content fresh.

We find they go in waves Netflix is good at the moment not much on Prime apart from Reacher but in a couple of months it will be the other way.
Also have Disney+ get that free with our bank account.

Same experience, sometimes I'll scroll Netflix and think... meh. Cancel and switch to Prime for a bit (try to keep the shopping impulse under control), absorb the brain melt on there, currently Reacher as you say, then move on.

Yup agree. We have both and nothing else.

Amazon is pretty good value when you consider the various extras you get with next day delivery etc

We do the same. With the fragmenting streaming services, it's all getting a bit stupid. Several services have franchises that we want to watch, but when there's a new season only once a year, we can find we've not used a service for a few weeks. It's a waste of money. A series will stay on the service for months, so there's no rush. Just vote with your wallet and switch to whichever has the best new content.
 
I'm with Prime and pay monthly, they are going to have limited adverts wef 5 Feb - or you can pay an extra £2.99 pm for ad free. Will wait to see what 'limited adverts' actually means, too many and I'll probably bin it. Anyone else get the email?

There's a fair bit of choice across BBC iPlayer, ITV X, My5 and Channel 4 streaming Apps, and they're free.
We subscribe to Prime as we use it a lot for business related purchases, and the streaming is included, plus Netflix. We'll probably have to subscribe to whichever platform NCIS is on for the next series, ditto if any new Star Trek stuff comes out (that's my guilty pleasure).
 
Thanks for all the replies. I get the sense that Netflix emerges as the winner. We used to be able to piggyback off one of our son’s account but I think they have stopped that now.

As a matter of interest have many folk cancelled their TV licence if in their 70’s? I have read stuff suggesting that if you only ever stream then cancel the licence?

Our TV aerial isn't even connected. I rearranged the living room and nobody even noticed when I didn't reconnect it. Everything we watch now is streamed. But we still pay for a licence because my other half still watches Call the Midwife on iPlayer.

Not found one yet - its 100% browser, so I'd recommend using an updated browser :)

But I only use it on a "disposable" laptop with VPN just in case lol - but it does work and works well. I've found some older stuff may have a spinny wheel at times, but 80%+ is perfect. (Also note VPN could be causing my issue)

I'm not sure on the legality - its watching/streaming, not downloading - no difference to netflix etc and no way to know if they are licensing and paying for the media or not. Of course, probably not, but as you are not downloading/sharing/uploading I am unaware of any illegal activity you are performing....

With your reference to “watching so much ‘live’ TV” I wondered if you had the normal main channels catchup streaming services, BBC iplayer, ITV X, MY5 and 4.
Only requirement is a smart TV and internet and no charge.
There’s a lot of programs that we didn’t watch at the time but can catch up with now.
We also have Netflix and Prime, though find Prime next to useless, invariably having to pay extra to watch anything.
 
Freesat, Smart TV or firestick and you'll have quite a choice.

We indeed have the main channels and a smart TV. Because we seem to binge watch on catch up the initial endless choice of what to watch sets more limited because we have watched so much. Hence beginning to contemplate a subscription service which we have previously discounted and indeed are still mildly reluctant about!
