chausson welcome
Can one, or more, of your good selves suggest some choices of good oil. In my local supermarket they have 'on discounted offer' Total Quartz 9000 nfc 5w-30...@ 29 euros. I think it's synthetic based. The engine has 82000 on the clock, alledgedly. (yes I know) looking forward to your suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Depends on the age of the vehicle. My Fiat is Euro 4 (2009) and use 5W/40 synthetic, specifically labelled for Diesel engines.

Later Fiat's changed to 5W/30 synthetic.

If it has a dpf then you will need low Ash c3 grade.
If it pre euro 5 then any decent 5. 30 should be fine.

Woops! I forgot to mention that my van was built in 1999. Does that make a difference as far as using synthetic oil? 5w-30w or 5w-40 or other?

Try one of the main parts Web pages, stick in your reg number and you should get recommended grades / makes of oil.

I guess your engine is a Fiat 2.8 JTD. What does the Fiat handbook recommend ?

This thread from OutandAboutLive forum makes interesting reading:

Euroserv (post 3) used to run a fleet of Fiat vans, so knows what he's talking about.

It looks like you should be using 10W40 semi-synthetic, if it's still avaiable.

So the conversion was built 1999, base vehicle probably manufactured 1998.

This Wikipedia page gives history of Fiat Ducato (and engines used) from 1981:

Looks like your engine could be any of the following:
1.9 D/TD
2.5 D/TDi
2.8 D/TD

I seem to remember using Castrol GTX (10W40 semi-synthetic) in my 1990 Fiat Ducato - oil still available online.

Cheers all, I decided on a 5w-40 synthetic by Total 9000. Thanks for your help.
