I'm thinking of fitting a 24v one in my coach.
How much water do they use and any pros / cons ?

Not had one assume from picture it just maserates Pooh up so it depends how much Pooh you do
Liquid will just pass through but smell if you don’t rinse
So I would say more than the drop in the tank toilet which you quickly rinse round the pan

You need a decent size tank to go with it (y) we have a Dometic/Seaflow macerator toilet in our van and wouldn't want to go back to cassette, how much water does it use? well I would say not a lot but I know that's not a very scientific answer, I know that some models you can set the amount of water it charges the bowl with so you obviously use that every time you flush, ours doesn't put much in but has a button to top it up if you think it needs more for a decent flush.

Downsides? some might say finding places to dump but we have not found that a problem yet but it might in some part depend on the size of your black tank.

How big will your black tank be?
We have a large one being an RV but have a macerator pump on the outlet to pump to Elsan point when no black waste drain.

I will be using a 220ltr barrel tank

Much better than casettes, I have a seaflow but without the macerator and with a foot operated electric pump, brilliant thing, uses as much water as you put in it, and much more pleasant to use. you will need a black tank separate to the grey tank and you will need to vent it, preferably at roof level.

We have an equivalent system but only supported by a 45 litre black tank , we chose how much water to use, but can typically go 3 days when solely using our own facilities before the full light comes on

Can’t push it far beyond that we get some worrying sounding gurgles when running the macerator with full light on 🤔😳

So I would say it doesn’t use much water 👍

Do/can you macerate out of the tank Jon(y) I can ask now I have finished my tea:LOL: re roof venting I think you have to be careful how close the vent is to open skylights ;)

You macerator users. One day, at a critical time, your macerator will stop. You'll have fun that day, I have the tee shirt. :D
I nearly put that as one of the "against's" in my previous post, at least I know ours is accessible unlike some bathroom designs, that is a good argument for a simple drop toilet as it gives you a few days to fix the macerator although sod's law it will pack up when the tank is brim full

Ours vents out of the roof quite close to a vent, pretty sure it doesnt come back in, think Methane is lighter than    air maybe

I think you would know if it did  I was reading a post on liner treff a few days ago and somebody was complaining that their roof mounted did.

We have a roof vent and before we discovered the game changjng 40 shots we definitely got a few whiffs through the bedroom skylight adjacent to the vent 🤔🙁

Can me and Martin please have a T shirt, Martin funflair gave me invaluable assistance when our macerator broke and I have had to open and unblock its replacement

🤔🤢

How do you intend to empty it? Most sites are set up for cassettes.

The tank will have a gate valve and a long pipe 💩
Hmm. From experience with narrowboat toilet pump outs, gravity probably won't be enough - a certain amount of suck and blow was often required to do the job, although I grant you that was without a macerator toilet so there was some 'clumping'. At the very least I'd consider another pump to empty it and the logistics of dealing with a raised disposal point like the sluices often found in site blocks, and a pipe running down from the tank, along the ground a back up to get into the pan.

Most drive over motorhome service point go to the mains sewer so can take black or grey, worth asking to check but then the problem is most sites don't understand macerated tanks and start talking about blocking grids etc etc as they only understand the contents of a cassette ;)

Never had a problem in 4 years of use, black dumps just as easy as grey.

Yes, a pleasant days drinking on the Isle of White rally last year rudely interrupted whilst I disassembled the toilet to unblock it, a relatively simple albeit rather messy procedure:giggle:

Definitely only works if macerated on the way in, I think Trevor was comparing to boat tanks unmacerated 🤔👍
Mine works as un-macerated. If I wanted to dump it every day it would be a problem but I have 150 litre tank so usually bank on only doing it between 10-14 days and not had a major problem so far. I find it much easier than trudging up to a cassette point every other day.

ASFAICS the issue with a narrowboat would be getting it onto a motorhome service point

Thirty odd degrees, no shade, August in La Ballena, 36’ RV, and a jammed macerator with about 25 foot of one and a quarter inch hose full of chewed up crap one end, about five foot of three inch flexible hose connecting the macerator to the black tank the other, blocking the road with a crowds of kids asking questions about the RV

Bloody tampon! The boys had let a girlfriend use the loo at a previous site

Never spec’d one since, as rather not give ‘Doo’s and Don’ts’ chat especially to ladies

Current camper, Thetford Aquamagic Residence, a “proper” toiler💩
