Trying to get back to Belfast a bit early for a funeral and heading to Calais at the moment and thought the Aire at Canterbury looked an ideal stop tonight. I have to pick up something in Yorkshire tomorrow so going to be heading up the A1 and just thought, rather than heading for the Dartford tunnel in the morning when I am leaving Canterbury, it would be easier and quieter to do it tonight.
If I did that is there anything like the Canterbury Aire north of London or any other ideas of somewhere to stay?
Thanks

There are plenty motorway services ,you can stay on them but they are not cheap and make sure you get a ticket because they fine you if you don't.
These services are safe enough as there are cameras everywhere and loads of lorries, not like the french ones that we keep hearing about.

Make sure you use the services on the P&R at Canterbury and then pick a quiet layby on the A1 theres plenty of them ,or have a look at this site.

I'm here at the moment, it's a nice old pub, free if you have a beer.

Use this place, just up the A1, great parking place, but go have a beer and can recommend the sausage and mash.

One of our regular A1 stops is a pub called The Recruiting Sergeant just North of Grantham, 5 mins off A1

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. Just had 3 hard days driving from Venice in a van with no cab aircon in 36 degree heat outside and 44degree heat in the van so decided to make things simple and pull in to Canterbury. What a terrific facility and just in the pub at the gate for a meal. Must be at least 50 vans here and at £8 a van, that’s at least £400 the council have made out of what would otherwise be an empty car park. What an example.

Can you get a Motorhome round the bend to their car park or have they added a new one?
