Not being too familiar with the working of Diesel engines, I would appreciate those with more knowledge/experience offering some advice on this issue. I have already used fuel additives unsuccessfully, in an attempt to eradicate the problem, which appears to be worse when the engine is idling or the vehicle is moving slowly in heavy traffic. The last MoT highlighted emissions as a possible future concern. I fear it may be an expensive fix - any thoughts?

Good morning Mangoforth. Smoke has a blueish look to it. Before lockdown, I gave it good run of about 250 miles and there appeared to be no significant loss of oil.

Hi, simple check firstly is the air intake clear (filter), is it due an oil change? is it over fueling injector or pump(check mpg) not so simple remove turbo intake hose and check for free play of fan or oil weeping of seal could be any of these before considering main engine wear.

If you can get hold of some Comma seal conditioner, or STP Stop Smoke or something similar, you can add it to the engine oil and run it up. Over time (generally quite quickly) it will act on any loose seals and help them to expand, preventing engine oil from seeping into the cylinders, which can cause smoking. Good luck.

Thank you for those suggestions Loft1 and ManTheVan. Air intake is clear - I've checked the air filter which is fine. Not quite sure what you mean by "is it over fueling injector or pump(check mpg)"?. To be honest I'm not sure whether the fuel system has a turbo element, the service manual makes reference to it being 'direct injection'.

The engine is probably a Ford Puma 2.2 Duratorq, blue smoke indicates it's burning oil , is the blue smoke just a puff on start up or continuous when driving ?

Especially when in slow queueing traffic and when pulling away having been at idle, for example, at traffic lights.
