I have just had my renewal from the RAC for my European Arrival Breakdown Insurance. Last year it was £382.20. Expensive yes, but it was great for peace of mind with no restrictions on Vehicle. It also covers us both individually in any vehicle. This year it has gone up a tad... £654.40! It has gone up by £272.20!

Looks like I will have to shop around again! Sad, we been with them for eight years...

Try phoning them and tell them you are leaving. Sometimes they have a rethink. 🤷‍♀️

Another for Nationwide. Ok it’s £18 p/month but if you have a joint account it covers you both for Worldwide travel insurance and full European Breakdown Cover, it also covers your mobile phones.
Oh, I’ve recently received £100 bonus from them which softens the blow.

Loyalty doesn’t pay… except for them…😳

That doesn’t seem right to me as we have just renewed for better than half of that quote, they sent a text reminder and then one with 10% off then 15 and eventually a few days before it was due 20% so I think we paid less than last year.

Well, I called them and told them I was going to cancel. As we have joint "any vehicle" and full European cover, I didn't really want to. Anyway, after much faff, They matched last years price. I accepted and now we are fully covered for our trip to France in a weeks time, I feel happier. I should also point out that we also have hotel cover and onward travel.

You don't even need a joint account, it covers family :)

Insurance companies think the public are stupid idiots ,, sadly many are ,, always check and complain they are ripoffs mostly owned by Private equity

We get free travel and health for as many 31 day holidays a year that we wish to take.
Comes with a Barclays account
But if you wish to do more than 31 day trip it cost an extra £9 per day over the 31 days

I'm surprised you qualified for the £100 freebie by just having a Flexi Plus account.

My branch told me I didn't? 🤔

But certainly not worth changing from a great bank just to get insurance!
No need to change banks, I opened a flex account specifically for the insurance, I just pay in a small amount by standing order each month and occasionally a little extra to spend when away as the account offers fee free spending on the debit card.

You need to have a saving account or mortgage as well, I have a regular saver. I like the thrill of a lump sum to spend.
I only have a flex account with Nationwide and I have received a couple of £100 payments over the last few years and just recently a £50 when Nationwide merged with Virgin money.

but is it the Flexi PLUS account with the insurances etc or just the Flex account? 🤔

I have the Flex plus account with the excellent insurances. I don't have any other Nationwide accounts.

I'll have another chat with my branch, they said a paid for account did not qualify as a 'current account '
I argued, then why was it in that section in all their blurb?
They had no answer! 😡

1. Are you eligible to receive the payment?
To be eligible, you must have one of the following product combinations:

A qualifying current account and qualifying savings
A qualifying current account and a qualifying mortgage.

Well, we've just got a flex plus joint account (paid for), no other accounts or mortgage, and each time they give away money we get double as it's joint. Last month 2 x £50 "The big Nationwide thank you"! No idea why!

I must say at this point that there have been far too many nightmare European breakdown experiences from a Funster Members covered by the RAC over recent years that I would never have EU breakdown cover with The RAC, as they have not only left people stranded not returning calls etc, but have not recovered to a garage that can do the repairs necessary in any reasonable time frame, at reasonable costs. They will never offer repatriation of the vehicle back to The UK without a fight, many of which the Funsters lost, and had to pay their own repatriation costs to get their van back to a decent garage that could fix it!....like Adams Morey, Portsmouth.
I thought more of us would have learnt that lesson reading the horrible experiences of too many of especially those with Comfortmatic Gearboxes that not many mechanics even Fiat have enough knowledge of.
I have also noticed that our insurance company namely Comfort, no longer use The RAC Breakdown cover anymore.
