I have encountered a problem recently following on from a Microsoft decision to no longer support 'Adobe Flash player' .
I had previously been able to 'crop' pictures within a text document using 'Open Office' but this now throws an error which freezes the program. The only way out is to use the old-fashion 'Control-Alt-Delete' method to do an 'End task' in task manager.
I am now using 'LibreOffice 7'. It has done what I want to do more easily. Not sure about other features as I haven't used it much yet. Time will tell.

not sure what this mythical closed wall garden is that is referred to? Haven't ever come across it within an Apple environment.
I think it's the sand-box that Apple use to keep apps secure.
Because it's an expensive task to get approval, many developers don't bother, so you end up with a reduced offering of applications. In return, you get applications that work without interfering with others and protection form malware.

I think Apple are good at what they do - but a bit restrictive and expensive.

Why limit yourself to Apple products when there's a whole world of Windows products --- and less expensive alternatives.

1.
I have encountered a problem recently following on from a Microsoft decision to no longer support 'Adobe Flash player'
Adobe stopped their flash player.

2.
Apple make apple machines and they’re not easy to upgrade = what the walled garden comments about I assume.

3.
Apple iPhone can be integrated with recent Win10 releases. No opinion on that as I just use iTunes to manage the music on my iPad & iPhone.

4.
Linux can be added to Win10. Just a CLI experience “out of the box” but modders have added a GUI iirc.
I use the Linux Win10 add on to manage Linux servers 👍🏻

5.
My employer offers staff apple or HP laptops.
A few of those that tried apples switched back to the Windows 10 HP machine. No idea on # of those that are happy & staying but I know the staff who get their Mac in a mess have to make a trip to HQ to get them rebuilt.

I’ve worked on Mac to support customers but it’s Windows I stay with and have the deepest knowledge of.

6.
I still use ms money. 2005 is he last UK version. Works well on my latest build Win 10 desktop.

7.
Google and apple don’t insist on gmail or iCloud email addresses for their accounts.
I use a yahoo email account to manage both.

Back in 2004 I had photoshop on a windows pc, nowt but issues with it so went on a course only to find they used Mac.

3 days later on my way home from said course bought a Mac, never looked back, I use mainly PS, iL, iD and Dw and burn a lot of video content, my current Mac home desktop is 2012, office desktop 2014, macbook pro 2011 and MacBook Air 2016 all still running CS6 (won’t pay a monthly fee) I use numbers but not often, I also have MS office for Mac but can’t remember when I last used it, for graphics and processing speed back in 2004 Mac was so much better and I’ve never tried windows again, I do have 2 windows p.c‘s 1 runs a VR setup for events and the other is just a rip for a large format printer.

I find when I do have to do anything with a windows pc they just annoy me, they just aren’t intuitive and you always seem to need to download or fix something.

I was a reluctant mover to a Macbook Pro. I can cope now. I needed to run Quicken accounts which I’ve been using for 30 years, and was no longer supported after 2004. It only runs on Windows, so I bought Parallels which allows me to run Windows in a separate “virtual machine” on the Macbook.

Windows -v- Apple. I think it is fair to say that I am reasonably skilled with Windows. I currently use Windows 10 and run mostly Microsoft software on my laptops. However, I need a new laptop and I have have been thinking of moving over to Apple. I am pretty sure that one particular MS program that I must keep using will not run under Apple but I can find a work around.

If I buy a new windows machine I will also need a MS Office set of software. Is it the same if I buy an Apple, i.e. will I need a raft of Apple software to cover word processing, spread sheets, etc, etc, or does the Apple machine come fully loaded?

Any help and advice gratefully received.

Cheers

Roger
OK here goes I have had many Microsoft machines over the years, in the early days I had one machine that would not use the onboard Modem, the computer shop had no idea why as other machines they sold were OK......So I took it to our labs who proved it was a hardware miss match that the MS software could not deal with. I changed out to Apple in 2010 and have to say its the best thing I could have done. It just works and any issues the Apple support team are great polite professional and its like having your own support team ( have only used them a couple of times).

Apple OS is a good stable platform, in part due to Apple making the software and Hardware with good quality control

Regarding MS Office yes there is a version for the MAC and I prefer to use MS office to the apple software not that there is anything wrong with it you can export Pages Numbers and Keynote into MS format when saving

As they say you pay your money and take your choice, Apple did a great job dragging computers into the 21st Century and Microsoft saw the light it now makes its own Computers But unless Apple do something really daft I will be staying with Apple.

Chrome or Chrome book I won't touch as Google has all your data and documents! Apple treats your data privacy seriously as does Microsoft

Amazon, Google and Facebook alll want to know you and hold your data!

If you are going to buy a new MacBook Pro or Air have a peak at the new processor its pretty amazing

No contest. Apple rules. You can ring them for instant advice. Also for old duffers like me they will screen share. Safe as houses.
There must be a contest or there’d only be one computer type.
Around 2004 when Boris7 was having problems with photoshop was maybe the last time apple had the edge.
Since then the broadcasters I’ve worked with or for, have had their edit and graphic suites switched away from Mac to Windows PCs.

80% of computers are Win - that figure from PCmag

I don’t think apple are squeaky clean with our data.
They’re often mentioned in articles like this when customer data is an issue.
Apple don’t have a voice assistant or want every one to socialise so maybe they stay under people’s radar.

No contest. Just a saying

What’s an Adobe program got to do with Apple.
Until Adobe found out that my copy was a knock off
I never had a problem

I had the same problem with Quicken and luckily found MMEX that transferred my Quicken files over. A lifesaver for me as my files go back to 1995.

:xdoh: of course it does. Thanks for the reminder.

edit: I even use Siri to stay hands free in the car...
No problem sometimes i think names like google Zoom Alexa get all the advertising and tends to stick in our minds, yet there are lots of variants but we tend to default I use Duck Duck Go as a search engine but refer to google it !

Just a tad..
I primarily use a MacBook but run G drive for everything now. Completely hardware agnostic, so can use an old laptop or my MacBook and everything is cloud based so available on any of my devices.

Same with PhotoDeluxe - just worked for me... kept it going on Win7 but my computer guru has just updated [won't say upgraded] me to W10.
Having enough trouble getting my head around getting current software to work without checking out the 'legacy' stuff yet.
Quoting myself
Knock me down with a feather...

From I've read up on, you can get MS Money to work too
Of course it won't connect to the Bank Apps as it used to do - but it should read all the old files

Iirc You need an old MS money licence. I have MS 2004
Then there’s an MS 2005 patch/upgrade that’ll smooth over the Win10 support. It is offline now. No live updates.
Well, you can still download transactions from banks, etc. that give you a supported export of those.
Been using it for years.
Not sure what to replace it with, but happy where I am too

So Apple has no connection to the Internet on any of your devices?
apple does not have my documents there is usage data which you can choose to share or not (it’s not compulsory) and my drive is encrypted apple cannot read the docs even if they wished to retrieve a document.

they truly don’t want your data in the way that other companies use it.

have a peek at Apple privacy and Apple could not help the FBI when they wanted to get in to an IPhone

Imac hard drive failed at nearly 5 years old (no extra warranty). Rang Apple who told me to take it to nearest Apple approved repair centre, new hard drive fitted. They charged me a £70 fee. Rang Apple who reimbursed the £70 and paid for the repair.

Had it been a Windows machine 4 years out of warranty, not sure who I would/could have rung, but I am pretty sure even if I found someone to ring what the answer would have been.

As I said in the post you quoted, all of my family are Apple converts so yes I have come across Apple products and they are very much more regimented than Windows and Android. But, as I said, OK as a retail product.
