  1. When petrolheads wanted to spend more time & expense on washing and polishing their pride'n'joy
  2. When car shampoo manufacturers discovered they could charge a premium for their product.
  3. When 'professional' car valeters had to differentiate their services from the ubiquitous east european £10 in & out merchants.

Washing and polishing a vehicle become...

"Detailing"?

Seems unnecessarily posey to me.

Just saying

JJ

In the Home Counties we do deatailing
In lesser places they spit and polish

Main difference- there's no spitting dawn South

Was it the first time someone was asked "how the hell can you possibly take all day to wash your bloody car?"

I think @Langtoftlad is probably spot on. Inventing the term "detailing" probably got some marketing genius somewhere a hefty bonus.

I'm still sticking with my Eastern European friends in Tesco car park (y)

Now look here Mr JJ I'll explain in great detail just for you.(y)

Take my van to the Polish lads down the road and explain in great detail I want a wash n wax and I'm not paying more than a tenner.:)

Or I can take it a posey place pay £200 for the same job but be bombarded by loads of useless information and detail about the wonderful waxes and polishes they use that justify the extortionate price I'm paying.:eek::eek:

Or I can do it all on my own drive using a hose pipe and bucket some cheap wash n wax shampoo then give it a decent polish once a year with good ole Turtle wan cost virtually nothing.:D:D

Pays yer money takes yer chances.

Me I'll choose option 3 every time:rofl::rofl::rofl:
Please before anyone reacts note 10 Smilies plus this one:doh:

Yeh, it doesn't half push the price up. A fiver at the local eastern European hand car wash, five hundred if you want it detailing or much much more if you own a Ferrari.

Good point Brian. Rather like a house parlor and a living room now becoming 'two reception rooms'........And someone owning a couple of cheepo rental slums 'adding to his portfolio'.

Complete with dirty, grit filled water.
Be in the car park before they are and the water will be clean.......ish

They've done all our vehicles, including new ones, apart from the MH and my bikes for years. Never had any complaints.

I am guessing here but here goes:

Washing: Polish guy, bucket of gritty water, basic

Wash and wax: Much as above, hand finished

Detailing/Valeting : As above two but better job done, tyres cleaned and tarted up, all plastics left looking spruce, carpets out and cleaned, upholstery cleaned, windows in/out done and everything left smelling like a cheap perfume

I actually enjoy detailing my cars. To me a valet is when you wash, vac and polish in a couple of hours. Whereas detailing is literally you go into every detail of the cleaning process, taking 30 plus hours. For example, decontaminate the paint work, paint correction, paint protection, wheels off, clean both inside and outside faces, brake callipers, engine bay etc etc....

Prior to purchasing the Motorhome, I've owned some nice cars and detailed them all to get that mirror finish on the paintwork. I've also had no problem in selling them, often fetching a premium due to condition(y)

Nissan GTR, spent 38 hours detailing

BMW M3, spent 52 hrs detailing

Now me, never wash vehicals from one year to the next , if you wash the muck off , it will only be the same when I go out of the yard but I was amazed yesterday , going past our local poles , cars were literally parking along the road waiting to be washed , and I would lay £100 every one of them was cleaner than any motor I've had more than a day before they went in(n)(n)
