Thinking of buying a Bailey 750 , this has a plated weight of 3850. As I'm an old codger I can drive this but my son can only drive anything weighted up to 3500 . Is there any way round this ?

As above.. You son takes a test...

You could downrate the weight to be 3500kg.. BUT You loose 350kg off your useable payload and looking at the spec that is more than half and would make the van almost unusable at that weight..

Two more options for you.
Choose a different van weighing 3.5 ton
Change son for an older one who has the correct licence.

Downgrade to 3500kg and tow a trailer you would then have more payload.

Whatever you look at, make sure you ask dealer for a weighbridge ticket, don't take their word. Lots of people have been caught out, not realising how much extra weight fitted options already take off the payload.
In the long run, it may be worth the cost of the C1 for your son especially if he has a family to take away.

Link Removed - £1000 for C1 training.

As @Riverbankannie said, it might be worth while getting his licence - that £1000 could mean the difference between the van you really want and one that's just ok.

If you do look at 3500kg vans.. Pay attention to the payload and how much it can carry.
If you son will use it does he have a family ? or just a couple?
You need to plan around these things... (y)

Good luck.
At least you are getting info BEFORE paying out lots of money.

Realistically you need to be looking at sub 7m vans to run at 3500kg. Our 7.2m Hymer wich is one of the new lighter vans has an MIRO of 2920kg but we ended up uprating it to 3850kg to enable us to run legally and we don't even have an awning.

By the way :pink:

From memory, Rick (motoroamin') once said the cost difference between taking a C1 (7500kg) and a full C (hgv) test was very little.
If you plan on taking a C1 consider a C instead and drive anything up to 30 tons.
