The grey waste tank sensor in our Bessacarr E560 is lying to me and telling me its full when it is sitting empty , this is not all the time , sometimes its working So , So , then next day its meh buggered again.
I bought 10 x 2ltrs of cheap cola and put it into the tank and drove for like 10 miles and left it in the tank for 1 day , but still its the same , so maybe the level of cola was not high enough to clean the sensor ?
I also had the tank removed a few months ago to paint the cradle it was in , and at that time i washed the inside of the tank out with a hose and it was clean, But i never removed the sensor to clean it at the time.
So does it sound like a dirty sensor ? or do they go faulty quite often and need replaced ??
If a replacement is needed , what sort of price are they to buy.

Sound like a dirty sensor , ours does it sometimes and you have to remove it and clean. Ours is 4 wire prongs.

My Swift tank has a drain cap under it that you can get your arm in. The sensor has 4 alloy prongs that I wipe with a cloth soaked in brake cleaner.
Once done it usually lasts for a few months before doing again

the metal contacts, often brass, attract crud from the grey water and start corroding on first use. the only (temporary) solution is to physically clean then using something abrasive like a pan scourer

Both the fresh water & grey water tanks on my MH have 100mm diameter screw-cap inspection points on their undersides. I have recently had a similar problem with my fresh water sensor, always showing empty. I removed the cover and sprayed the inside with white-wine vinegar to descale it. The sensors were like 4x M6 threads protrouding into the tank at 50mms intervals. After they had soaked in vinegar for an hour, I rubbed them with an old scotchbrite cloth, and it seems to have solved the problem.

We have an identical van and have disregarded the readings for some years now, I always have a good idea of what's in there and empty the tank when convenient. If you crawl under and look at the tank you'll see there are a number of holes drilled in the tank near the top. This means it cannot fill and back up into the drains. It also means that if near full it will drop a little water every time you corner!

I have just looked at the tank and to remove the sensor i would have to remove the tank again , i can access the rods by removing the 100mm bung in the botom of the tank , so ill try spraying it with vinegar and letting it soak in it , then clean the rods with an abrasive sponge

In our Bessacarr I've noticed that the tank sensors only work in 25% intervals and are very literal. If your fresh water tank is only a couple of litres below full it'll show as 75% on the panel. I think it's the opposite with the waste water, so 74% full will show as 50%. Not very precise anyway, even if they are working.

Useful info about cleaning - ta.

Mine only has an alarm when its full. I never let it get anything like full as I think it makes sense to empty whenever an opportunity arises. I travel with a full fresh water tank, but can't see the merit in carting around a load of dirty water. As a general guide if the fresh waters getting low, the waste will be getting high (especially in hot weather :D)

You could try these

they're supposed to be much better and almost a straight swop from the originals, they fit in a 3/8" hole, there's also video clip explaining how good they are ?

when somebody starts selling a moving float system type water level sensor, they will be onto a winning product. its not that hard to do, as its used in pretty much all vehicle fuel tanks
