This colourful little chappie arrived yesterday afternoon, and is here again this morning. It certainly send me scurrying through my bird guides. Any guesses?? Look underneath the image below for the answer ....

Well done if you said Lady Amherst Pheasant: Originally introduced from China, and this individual is almost certainly an escapee.
And it's back in the garden again this morning feeding around the bird feeders. :thumb:

That's how our UK pheasant became established, brought over and escaped.

Lovely colours on that one though.

Pretty rare in Grantown. The remaining feral population is centred around Bedford so I wonder how this one got into Speyside?

If it gets anywhere near a road it'll be an ex Lady Amherst Pheasant - the species isn't exactly noted for its road sense.

Seven weeks on, and he's still here, and now lies in wait for me most mornings when I appear at the window to put the kettle on. He then comes running over from the back of the garden, and paces around whilst I go into the garage to emerge with a handful of seed. He is now happily being fed by hand and certainly adds some colour to the garden!!

Hmmmmmmm........Rather have this in the garden. Lesser spotted twit-weed carrier. Very rare, (and she was cold....for a while anyway). :thumb:

I think technically it's a Silver Amherst but that's only a

Lady Amherst with a specific colouring:Smile:

You've got me there! This happens frequently with birds - identical birds - and sub-species - are given different names across different continents, and in these instances they can all be specifically identified by their latin name. In the case of the Lady Amherst's pheasant it's "Chrysolophus amherstiae." If it were a Silver Amherst it would have its own latin name. Over to you. :winky:

SHOOTS??!!!! :Eeek:

I don't shoot anymore myself but I've lived in the country for
most of my life.
Would love to take up photography seriously but at the moment fishing is all I can afford.
Anyway cameras are a bit too high tech for us bloody pensioners.
