an interesting point to this is that weight measuring sensors are being embedded into british motorways. when switched on, the police will know vehicles are overweight BEFORE they pull them in. good stuff this modern technology and immediate access to the dvsa databases. your fine is in the post before you get home

As far as I am aware there are only a handful of WIMS (weigh in motion sensors), and no more planned.

Been here for years between jn 10-12 on M6 with the built in "Weigh in motion" and the pull over area... Whenever we pass there are always impounded trucks sat there. Mainly the bigger trucks...

My suspicion is that many, many motorhomes rated at 3500 are overweight, but in practice get away with it - certainly in 10 years I have never been checked.

Nevertheless personally I would prefer to know that I am legal. And there is NO leeway in what is legal, although the guidelines in the UK recommend a verbal warning if the overload is less than 5%.

For me the greater risk is insurance. If there were a serious accident, and the van was weighed, and was at all overweight the insurance company could refuse a claim.

So you could get uprated, as long as you accept the lower speed limits and higher tolls in many countries - and of course the different licence requirements which may or may not be an issue. Otherwise, sadly, I would recommend leaving things out, starting with water etc. I would also question whether a second battery is really necessary in this situation. Personally I would not be happy without a spare wheel, though.

Were rated @ 3700kgs which is good because we went over the weigh bridge @ 3200kgs.
500kgs payload is a lot better than 300 for long trips. More beer see.(y)

Our PVC has this under the bonnet, but the total can still only add up to 3500, so if the front axle was on the maximum, 2100, the rear should be no more than 1400. Which it could only achieve with the aid of a large hot air balloon I suspect.

Might be typo but your plate is 2400 rear axle not 1400.

DBK is just saying IF his front axle was fully loaded, then there could only be 1400kg on the back to stay within the Max gross weight.

Forgive my ignorance but on our V5 form our van has a revenue rated weight at 4005kg.

What does that really mean?

It legal terms not a lot, this revenue weight should match the max vehicle weight stamped on your chassis, this is the important one as this is the one that sets, speed limits, licence requirements etc.

Find your plate on your MoHo and see if they match, if they do and your max weight is 4tonnes you require a C1 licence, either from passing your car test pre 1997 or by taking the C1 test

Before we went abroad last year we went to the weigh bridge and were overweight before adding the wife and clothing for the trip. No way we could ditch anything so did both a free weight upgrade and a further weight upgrade by fitting air suspension to the rear.

Best excuse ever to get fined abroad if overweight and be declared uninsured in the event of an accident if you are overweight.

Get a weight upgrade and keep your spare wheel!

I understood that it was the unladen weight that determined the speed limits, not the MTPLM ...

I think the fuel tank is near the front on many motorhomes, where front axle weight may not be the real problem.

OK - thanks.

Will this plate also identify the payload max weight?

Most Motorhomes will have 2 plates the base vehicle manufacturers plate and the converters plate. The converters plate or last plate fitted takes precedent.
Plate does not show payload.

Just back from the weightbridge and with everything we need except food and clothes but brimed tanks in a 3300kg PVC we have 60kg left. Both axles well under weight.
So off to have a sort out and find whats lurking in there that I can ditch.
Run tanks half full say 90kg off.
Tow bar and spare another 40kg?
50 bottles of wine say 70kg

Your carrying around 50 bottles of wine? No shops where you're travelling to?
