New to motorhomes 2019
From Birmingham Live

Older drivers are at risk of a £5,000 fine by failing to follow a little-known driving licence rule. Elderly motorists hoping to get behind the wheel of heavy campervans and motorhomes are being urged to make sure they have the correct licence at all times.

To transport a heavy model over 3.5 tonnes, road users must have a C1 entitlement on their driving licence. Max Schmidt, head of camper tour operator, CamperDays told the Daily Express newspaper: “Those who received their standard driving licence before January 1, 1997, automatically received a C1 category licence, but drivers since have only been able to secure the C1 entitlement through additional driving, eyesight and health tests."

He went on: “The C1 category licence has to be renewed regularly, but how frequently depends on the driver’s age. C1 licence holders under 44 must renew their licence every five years, but those aged 44+ must renew annually."

Obviously getting mixed up with HGV and the C class....

"If you are under the age of 45 your HGV medical will last until your 45th birthday, after which you will need to pass the HGV medical assessment every 5 years until the age of 65. After the age of 65 you will need to pass the HGV medical assessment every year."

He is getting confused with Class C & D (HGV & PSV) vocational licence holder requirements. At age 65, it becomes an annual renewal for those licence holders, myself included unfortunately. :(

Cheers,

Jock. :)
