Paul, if you are referring to travelling down through France to Spain over winter, I believe the snow chains are only required on certain routes, ie, on the Eastern routes.
I'd rather take the Western route myself, thereby not needing to fit either winter tyres, or carry snow chains.

I looked at those in store when they first came in and they did not do a size big enough for van tyres

Have you looked at snow socks. Really great product and not the weight of chains.
