It's suddenly got really, really windy here and, to be honest, we're both a bit scared. It feels like the motorhome's lifting up! Can you seasoned motorhomers please assure us that it feels worse than it really is. I'm thinking of just crawling under my duvet and hope it goes away. I also hope it isn't like this tomorrow when we have to drive home :eek:

I am sure that it feels worse than it is but the duvet is not a bad idea, if it is really windy be carefull on the road, you don't say where you are though.

many many years! since I was a kid
with a motorhome it is pretty much unheard of for any normal gale to blow them over whilst parked. just uncomfortable with a high wind side on. better to turn the van nose into the wind if youre worried

@funflair, we're just up the coast ftom Barmouth in Wales, up being the operative word. We're quite high up overlooking the sea.

@TheBig1, we can't turn because of the pitch we're on, but I think the wind is coming in from the sea which is directly in front of us. We're roughly about 3/4 mile from the sea but high up.

I'd keep the vents down, so that they don't catch the wind. I've known one to be ripped off but doubt you'll come to any harm. Stay warm and comfy. It may help you sleep.

It's only the wind inside your motorhome you should be worried about.
Such a confined space:D

According to Windytv.com the wind is gusting from 14 -20 mph just now with the gust speed to increase overnight and tomorrow.

Small world, we were just up the coast near Portmadog for a few days and left this morning.

Best take in any awnings or anything that might act as a 'sail' and you'll be fine (y) :)

Don't worry about it.... have a sherry or two. We slept through 50-65mph gusts at Sango sands on top of the sea cliff in August last year. Checked the wind speed with an anemometer then checked Windytv, it was close enough. Lot of vans rocking that night, who knows if it was just the wind cause we did not go a knocking :p:cautious::D

You should be fine as long as you have installed the "anti blow job" strops situated on either corner of the chassis. :)

@Vanman, we went to Porthmadog today on the bus, via Harlech. No awning to worry about, just a bucket that I've put under the grey waste pipe, probably won't be there in the morning!

We had a REALLY windy night once parked up on the outskirts of Sandsend near Whitby, we'd parked up at the top and despite us being sheltered by some of the crops in the fields next to the parking area it was rocking us something rotten, in the end as there was no possible chance of any sleep we went down into the village and parked behind a toilet block to put something solid between us and the wind coming off the sea ... it was still a bit rocky but nothing like it had been up top!

This was the sea state in the morning after it had actually calmed down a bit ... yes that IS the main road!

@Diggerdi : Only ever been truly scared once in the wind. Coming up the M74 at Abingdon with a cross wind of 80mph on a 45ft double decker trailer at 16ft 3inches. Tractor unit was in the slow lane and the trailer axles were in the middle lane, brown trouser moment that lasted for the whole 30 minute trip into Glasgow, thank god it was the middle of the night so I couldn't see everything.

You'll be fine, we were camped up in the pennines few weeks back, overlooking Holmfirth. It was our first night in the van after collecting it earlier in the day. It was the day of storm Doris. We had 50mph winds and we'd got stuck in the mud and were sideways on. It was fine, worst thing was the sound of the mains inlet cover flapping against the side of the van all night, surprising how loud it was.

It sounds worse than it is. Must admit we were worried about our newly fitted solar panel held on by posh glue, but it was ok.

I assume you haven't got external screens on at the moment?

@Andy H , funny you should mention the mains inlet cover, took us a while to work out what it was. Holmfirth is almost on our (home) doorstep, i imagine it can get a bit rough up there. Don't envy you being there during Storm Doris, although we didn't feel the effects of it east of Manchester.

It was very odd, by the time I got in bed about 10.45, the wind stopped as quickly as it started. And, yes, I do realise I've left myself wide open there
