@andy63 Just curious Andy which route you decided upon and how it went?

I'm just starting to think about our route from Bilbao to Beni in a few weeks time. @busby Phil, looking at my Michelin planner app, the Zarragoza route seems to come up the quickest and shortest 474 miles and about 33 euro on the motorways? But you seem to favour the Madrid route and I just wondered why. Is it that it's better from Santander?

Hi sorry just noticed the thread...
I ended up taking the zarragoza route from Santander.
I can't remember the total toll cost but the roads were clear and good.. We overnighter in calamocha and made benidorm following day..
Might not be as scenic as an alternative but as I said good roads.
It was January when we travelled and as mentioned by someone at time it always pays to have a plan B..
The weather can cause problems with ferries and roads ..

Hi Andy, we have just done this trip, from Santander head for Bilboa,
pick up AP68, it is toll road all the way to zarragoza, €33, from there take A23, to Valencia, then A7, then AP7 toll, €13, to Beni,

If I remember correctly one of the passes was 1300 meters high

We have used both routes and i think the route via Madrid is the most scenic but would check weather forcast before travelling. Nice drive though via Zaragoza. Enjoy your trip,,,we are a month behind you Dave. BUSBY.

Puerto de Somosierra is approximately 1400 metres. I have travelled that way a few times during snow and although the snow ploughs keep the road 'clear' it is not a relaxing drive in those conditions.

Bilbao A8-A68 to Miranda de ebro N1 Link to Burgos (some of A1) E5 to Madrid. Madrid ring road and pick up A3. (option to go to Aranjuez on the A5 The old Spanish Summer capital, Nice Site There in which case cross country on the N400 to the A3) A3 becomes A31 to Albecete where the choice is A30 to Murcia, and the N370/A7 to Benidorm.

Last Used February 2009 In reverse. La Manga to Bilbao. So Many roads will be upgraded I suspect! (My Taxes!)

We take the following route from Santander to Alicante.
A-67, A-231 to Burgos, E-5 to Madrid, M-50, A-3, E-901/903, A-30

ALL roads are dual carriageway and only short section of toll road (not expensive)

Goggle Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabarceno. Stayed earlier in the year, beautiful location for a stopover about 30 minutes from Santander.

The Aire at Cabarceno is great. We stayed there in March 2013 on our way back from Murcia. And an easy run to the ferry.
