Well, the day (Friday) is finally here when we get to collect our spankingly new Frankia I680BD from SMC :party3:

So after handover and 2 nights in Newark reading the manual and playing we are off on a 10 day shakedown trip to North York Moors area. As a southerner do I need any special instructions or permissions and will I be deafened by the squeaking of 'tight' Yorkshire folk? What's there and worth doing, seeing and experiencing in the area plus any stop over locations (Brit Stop, C&CC, C&MC, CL's, independents & wild camping etc).

Only known at this stage is bit of cycling in Dalby Forrest and believe Pickering is a nice little place to stop.

Await the responses (polite or otherwise) with interest.

The place is amazing, we stayed with @Jez and Lin for a week in 2015 and among the many attractions was the drive to Pickering to grab a staem train trip to Whitby which in itself is worth visiting. Fascinating week, the pubs in and around York Minster were incredible, Jez took us for lunch one day into a Pub serving the most amazing clear cider. Beautiful.

You will enjoy the area almost as much as your New High Quality Frankia. (y)

I was told that BS 753 offers large portions and a good night's sleep.

Scarboro' CCC is next to a main road but reasonably well screened. Scarboro' was my regular holiday resort as a boy and I still like it although some will disagree. Park along Marine Drive/Royal Albert Parade and enjoy waves crashing over the walls or walk to Peasholm Park/Northstead Manor Gardens. Enjoy the views from the Castle or the Italian Gardens on the south bay: park up on Esplanade (which is not at sea level - get a map [and parking disc?]).

Whitby is interesting but hilly: park on West Cliff or go down to Sandsend for good views and tackle Lythe Bank to check out your gearbox.

The Moors themselves are lovely: try the NYMR with easy parking at Grosmont.

Enjoy - Gordon

Needless to say a trip to Jez and Lin's place is not the same now as before they modernised it..... it looks like this now...........

There is an aire type stop over in pickering opposite the Lidl store and behind a small row of shops.
You enquire within one of the shops which has a sign in the window.
I believe it's a private car park and around £10 per night. Popular and worth pre-booking.
Main shopping street is a few minutes walk with a few decent pubs as well.
10 minute walk to the N.Y. moors railway station where you can get a steam train to Whitby through fantastic scenery and old railway stations (Harry potter's 'Hogwarts' was filmed at one station), including Goathland, AKA (Heartbeats) 'Aidensfield', a bit commercialised but worth a visit.

There's not much to be worried about. It may seem a little unnerving but people will talk to you. I know, I know. This would never happen down south. They are not going to steal things from you. They will speak in English as well. The green stuff on the floor is called grass. The white woolly things on the moors or in fields are called sheep. We up here eat them, the meat is called lamb. No it doesn't all come in plastic wrapping. The beer will have white froth on top. We call this the head, it will be much cheaper than down south.:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:.

Have a great trip. Hope you get good weather.

Whitby is lovely as is Runswick bay. You can help keep Whitby tidy by eating a seagull everyday.

Crikey! That IS our front room from my childhood!
You'll love the area, but I suppose I'm biased being born a Yorkshire lass (But then emigrated to Lancashire when I married a foreigner;)).
Love Scarborough. Walk to the cliff top from the C&CC site to the Sea Life centre then into Scarborough or pick up the open top bus there. Staithes, further north up the coast is a lovely little fishing village. Whitby is lovely. You need a few weeks to get around it all!(y)

Tha' can hire a whippet ta put down't trousers an all!

You will understand why it's called gods country when you get there. Proper folk, proper ale, proper food. None of that calligraphy food, that costs a packet.
You should take the steam train to/from Pickering from/to Whitby.

There is wonderful place in Pickering called Lowther House that is in Britstops. We stayed there one night and the owners were very friendly. Under no pressure from the owners, we had lunch there and it was fabulous. It is 5 minutes walk from Pickering station where you can catch the steam train to Goathland. The station had a WW2 theme when we were there and Pickering is lovely to walk around.

I can recommend the Crown Pub in Hutton Le Hole. We stayed there over bank holiday weekend (iirc it was £10 a night including hook up) the food in the pub is fantastic (you may need to book).

There is also a ccc ths in the village and the church view cl (I think). It is a fantastic spot to spend a few days.

Not much to do if you aren't a walker or cyclist though.
You could always count the sheep wandering around the village I suppose.
With all due respect Rydale folk Museum is excellent and is next door to the THS. A lovely walk takes you to Lastingham and the Blacksmiths Arms there do cracking food.
You've got to do York, try get on Rowntrees (caravan and Motorhome club site) which is an easy walk into town.

Chance would be a fine thing!!. (n) The number of times we have tried to book, there is NEVER space.:( It`s one of the sites that hundreds book every January 1st. Multiple times. "Just in case" they fancy a weekend away!. IF you are very lucky, you might just get a Pitch "ON THE DAY", because of a "NO SHOW".!!!!

As I type this. There are 13 SINGLE nights scattered though May and June, and ONLY 2 nights together, in May. There is a 4 Night window in June

Rant over!.

I believe that they are addressing the selfish type of booking you've mentioned. My brother used the site last week and had no problem getting on, best try through the week out of school hols.

I can second that, it's a nice flat site and great for walking or cycling into town. It's worth knowing that this THS runs right through the school summer holidays too, great spot at Yorkshire prices. The clubhouse is open to everyone too!(y)

My suggestion would be York, then up to Helmsley stopping over at Hutton Le hole ( THS ) then Pickering, use the car park / aire opposite Lidl's and do the North Yorkshire Railway to Whitby. Thornton Le Dale is lovely as is Rosedale Abbey and Gothland is Heartbeat country and worth a visit, then there is the East coast, Whitby, Robin Hoods bay and Scarborough.

Thanks everybody for the helpful info and have decided to do the following locations. The sites are not that far apart but as this is the first trip to shakedown the new van so have kept it simple with majority offering full facilities. We will take the opportunity to drive out to places suggested like Scarborough, up onto the moors and along the coast so we can learn to handle her, plus enjoy some walks and generally explore the countryside. Will also take the train to Whitby as my lovely lady does like a good steam train and I will spend a few days dragging my lardy arse around Dalby Forrest on the bike pretending I'm still in my twenties!

12-14 May, 2 nights @ Smeaton’s http://www.smeatonslakes.co.uk
14-18 May, 4 nights @ Castle Howard http://www.castlehoward.co.uk/stay-with-us/camping-and-caravanning
18-21 May, 3 nights @ The Crown
21-22 May, 1 night @ Brit Stop near Pickering
22-25 May, 3 nights@ Stoneclose Campsite https://stoneclosecampsite.co.uk/the-site/
25-26 May, 1 night @ Smeaton’s

Then its back to SMC in Newark to return the van so they can complete one outstanding job before heading home to Dorset.

Cheers again for all the great info and here's to a fun trip
