Here is a question for you clever dickies.......How would you go about retrieving it with the least cost and additional damage. Answers on a postcard to............:)
Possibly the same way they can recover airliners which slide off the runway onto soft soil and get bogged in. By putting inflatable bags under it and raising it. Not sure if that was how they did recover it but you can get bags for raising vehicles in say soft sand, the ones I've seen run off the exhaust. Once lifted it might be possible to roll it back.

Alternatively, just push it into the river and claim on the insurance.

Fire engine arrives, and connects strop to rear chassis, taking up the weight. A 'sausage' air bag goes underneath. As its inflated, the transmitted load comes off the underside, and onto the strop. Brake off, fire engine reverses, sausage 'rolls' with the load. I think they charge around £200 for the service, which is classed as non-emergency.
Too technical.

Truck mounted Hi-ab.
front wheels cradled as if lifting onto flatbed truck.
hi-ab lifts front end and retracts arm drawing front onto shore.
any self respecting recovery firm will have a hi-ab for total loss recovery work.

Of course we're all assuming he/she wasn't reversing at excessive speed on the opposite bank.

But putting that theory aside for a moment I bet they were damn glad the mother-in-law was in the loo when the driver's foot slipped.

The driver was recently seen at the Calais aire. Dropped rear wheel into the grey water drain and lifted the diagonal front wheel into the air. Needed tug from large vehicle.
