Some friends of ours are looking at hiring a motorhome this summer but have got a bit confused with all the companies and what the pitfalls are with different companies.

Does anyone have any tips on how they should chose a company (price obviously a big one but other things to consider too)?

Any company anyone has knowledge of in this area?

    Cheers

You need to find a company that firstly OWNS the vehicles, that is the easier way to weed out some of the bigger names with dubious insurance.

You then need to look at what is covered. You need comp insured, with all the extras such as breakdown, hotels, replacement vehicle, repatriation etc. You do need to be covered in case something does go wrong. Many companies will just take your money and leave it up to you to recover their vehicle!

Check for companies that proactively maintain their vehicles - if over serviced, they care about it as much as they do their customer. Also look for other signs such as checks, licence checks etc - if they are not attempting these, then do raise an eyebrow. They should do these as a matter of course.

Also look into damage deposits, amount and what you are liable for - many charge only £500, but you are liable for £1500. Also ask if they have ever have damaged vehicles come back - if they smile and reel off a list, then they may be making money on damage deposits - which is a nothing less than immoral at best. You also need to ask what you happen if say you 'broke a window catch', would you loose the lot? Some will say yes, others will just cover costs and return the rest.

As fior companies, you must have a practical rental depo in your area - they do motorhomes.

My son uses this outfit. I must say they do seem a nice bunch to deal with. I picked up some hire brochures from them last year before my son purchased his one.

Just having a very quick glance , the hire rates don't seem to be too bad.
