I got a book from Amazon recently that is a guide to what are supposed to be theBroken Link Removed

The wife and I don't need any more reasons to go to France apart from the wine, food, scenery etc but this book gives you some places to aim for. The entry for each village gives no details of nearest aires (does have campsite names though) but I am checking in All the Aires France to find the nearest place to park up.

You would be better looking at www.searchforsites.co.uk or www.park4night.com you get the more obscure ones in there , alltheaires only have the main ones(y)

I cant think of one of the most beautiful villages that we have been to (probably 20 of the 40) that doesnt have an aire. There is a much bigger list of maybe a 1,000 that get a special mention.

From my experience, the way to find the most beautiful villages in France, or any other country, is to either let your sat nav "take you" (as many people like to say), down an unplanned narrow and winding road or simply and intentionally turn off your planned route, into that little side road and into the unknown.
It works for me and I've stumbled on numerous little villages I'd never had seen had I stayed on my route.

An example: Savoillans, 44.17966, 5.37575

I just spotted the cluster of buildings from the main road, turned off to check it out ...... and stayed 3 nghts.

But I too have a couple of books on the most beautiful and hidden villages of France.

We bought a map years ago of the Plus Beaux Villages de France and looks like you can still buy them online .

It has been a bible for us planning trips around France.

We used camper contact whilst touring France and found one of the Plus Beaux Villages, which happened to be approx 3kms from the free aire that we thought we might stay at. Instead we moved to the village and spent 3 nights in the most idyllic spot.

Don't know if this is true but was told by a French motorhomer as true, that every village is duty bound by law to supply somewhere to park for the night and if they havnt got a designated aire you can park in front of the marie.
