we only ever use the Tv when were ' were hooked' up so were considering purchasing a 19" Smart tv
we have two smart tv's in the house and will play most files especially movies from our WD passport without us having to reformat the movie file.......any thoughts?

Sounds fine to me, if you are "hooked up" you certainly have no power constraints so go for it.

Wish my tv would play my wd passport without formatting. I had to buy a mini media player to do that.
I don't know how to format it anyway.

No issues at all.. even off mains, just a small inverter will do the job..
Modern LED TV's take naff all in power compared to older sets..
When your buying just look at the label on back of the TV and see how many watts it states,, divide that number by 12 and you will know how many amps it will use if you ever wanted to run on 12v..
