Hunting for a Hymer
We aren't new to motorhomes & campers but a Hymer will be a new venture for us. Budget suggests that we are looking for an A Class with drop down bed from between 1998 and 2004 dependant on mileage and condition. We would be really grateful for a steer as to the model ranges from this era. What we want to avoid is having to make up a bed every night from seating cushions which we find uncomfortable (and a faff!). The van will ideally have an awning, solar panels and less than 200,000kms on the clock. TIA.

We had a B564. Ours was 2006, but it was a beautiful van. Huge back bathroom, drop down bed, and brilliant fresh water and waste capacity.

Could you give me an idea of your budget?

I have a friend who may be selling a Hymer Starline 700 2005, very low mileage.

I am unsure of what he is selling it for, but could enquire if you let me know your budget.

We were in your position 5 years ago. We looked at the Hymers mentioned above but finally went for a 2004 Burstner i681 Elegance which is slightly bigger than the equivalent Hymer B544/584 etc. Might be worth a look.

We used to have a B544 2002.
Lovely van but started to suffer from electronics rot (as they are prone to) so we decided to part company and changed to a Hymer caravan.
We have since learned that it is feasible to replace the whole wiring loom which would almost certainly have solved our problems.
However be aware that early 2000 vehicles are getting a bit long in the tooth and most commercial Fiat garages won't have seen one for 15 years or more, which is well past the length of service of most of the mechanics.

So - best of luck, there are some lovely examples, but be prepared for things to wear out.

We have a B525. 2006 on the Merc 2.7L chassis. . Works well for us as it has garage with a bed over as well as a double drop down bed. It's well built and has aged well. There can be problems with the garage floor rotting. Rear mudflaps help
For info generally models ending in 0 or 5 are based on the Merc chassis and the rest on fiat. The first number gives some idea of length in meters but it's quite variable. So ours with the 5 is 6.3m. The equivalent fiat version is the B524. The B700 mentioned above is probably about 7m long on the Merc chassis.
Good luck.

he was supposed to be withdrawing it as the campsite fell through & they have to live in it still.
Interesting - I knew the deal for the campsite was 'at risk', but didn't know it had actually fallen through - so thanks for the info! (y)

B644 with the 2.8jtd, the things are total work horses, you will not be disappointed if you look for a nice one.
