Hi, anyone know an area to park when visiting the archaeological site? I see Pompeii has a dedicated camper van park.
    Cheers Paul.

It's absolutely terrible round there. We were in a Corsa and parked in the police station opposite but I'd not want to take a MH anywhere near, you are talking back streets of Naples type of roads.

This was 2005 so keep you fingers crossed for a more optimistic reply.

Public transport is good, we realised we needn't have hired a car when we flew there in 05.

I would not even consider it, the driving around there is abysmal, I was scared and I was travelling in a bus.

Herculaneum, nice site, far better than Pompeii, lot small and more intense. But, we were warned that there is a lot of crime around there and we took precautions,,,

    Shifty does not jest.

We hired this little Corsa at the airport. It had 6 major "dings" in it on collection.

Within 30 mins I had pinged the driver's side mirror 3 times, it was that or wear a scooter. They aim at you in Death or Glory mode. I could hear them saying "moritori te salutant".

Only by superhuman skill did I return that Corsa with the same 6 dings and no scooters.

The only cars we saw without dings were in showrooms, new.

Other side of the coin, we got the train from Sorrento to Pompeii €3. Pompeii to Naples €3. High speed ferry Naples to Sorrento €4. Sorrento harbour to hotel €1. Brilliant.

Whatever we say you MUST go there. Walk if you have to.

    Naples.

I agree about the traffic, have already visited the sites by rail and foot but have to pick up a couple of people at Rome airport and transport them to Sicily, but neither of them have visited Pompeii or Herculaneum.Think i will park up at the Pompeii bus park area and they can catch a taxi to Herculaneum!! I see the main street has reopened in Herculaneum this week. Also just discovered that Google Earth Street View does both the sites!!!!!! How did they get in there? So really no need to go at all,I will sit in the carpark and turn the laptop on,much cheaper and easier on the legs.
    Cheers Paul
