We recently took ownership of a 2019 Carthago C-Tourer which has had some DIY solar and Inverter mods done. The work looks to have been to a good standard. The installer, a former owner, was an electrician by all accounts.

I have two questions

A) What us this telling me? It seems to be in the battery circuit

IMG_8204.jpeg

The inverter is a 2000w pure sine wave job.

And ….

The Votronic 1250 display for the the MPPT controller is dead as a dodo.

IMG_8209.jpeg

There are three banks of solar on the roof (estimate 350w)

IMG_8203.jpeg

This is the controller…

Any suggestions- I’m teccy, but due to alcohol and senility, I am easily confused.

Where do I start to fix the display (which was working when I. Got the MoHo)

Try disconnecting/connecting solar display wire from the mpp controller.

Absolute beginners.
On the Votronic 350, have the dip switches been set correctly for the battery bank, lead/Gel? Have they been knocked whilst other work was being done in the area.?

Also check the 30a fuse. Worth covering the panel if you're able to, or wait till dusk.

Try disconnecting/connecting solar display wire from the mpp controller.

The first pic is a weird and very cheap battery monitor.

Have you tried disconnecting the Votronic display to see if it resets?
Yes the photo of the rear of the “display” was taken while disconnected. No change when I plugged it back in

I suspect it’s a wiring fault, these seem to be in the lead between the controller and the display.

Silly question from me here but ...Your Voltronic controller is showing Led's on at AES and Full power and MPP . All indicating that the battery is fully charged and looking at the display ...it too identifies with fully charged batteries . Are you saying you have nothing now ? My apologies if I am seeing this incorrectly

Hi Lenny . It is cheap but funnily enough...it works really very well. It basically gives what is required to us "Amoeba's' when trying to see what is being used or stored at a given time. It Really is not that complicated . Quite surprising really just how good it it when in use.
In the old days of the 12v Red amber and green voltage reading for the batteries (Im sure you can recall them? lol) it was just to allow a visual idea of how things are doing. This is similar but a little more refined and because of its build quality...rather spot on with measurements actually.
Remember ....not all that is cheap....is crap! Most will be and of that I am sure. Occasionally sometimes ....'cheap' can be good...(y);)

Regards Kev

I’m pretty sure the batteries are genuinely full. There’s two 80Ah gel batteries. (Different brands)

The blue display is working, the votronic solar “display” is dead. Nothing on the screen at all

Not sure the shunt and negative wire are in the right place though? (But that’s a different issue)

Here’s a few shots of the rest of the system in case it helps.

Mike.

The regulator looks to be set to Gel and the 39A fuse is ok.

The Votronic regulator is working as it should. The green lights show that the battery is full. In that case the regulator has stopped charging it.

It looks like it is a cable fault - I realised I had an old RJ11 modem cable so I tested the Display unit with that and it works. I’ve ordered a new longer modem lead as it is cheaper than the Votronic one!
