Hi, last night main desk pc suddenly went back to windows xp main start up page then gave me a light blue screen saying "file record segment xxxxx is unreadable" and continued to check files for about 30 mins. Cannot get into windows to do anything else and still the same this morning. Is this a hard disc fault? Most stuff is backed up but there are a few folders which are new which I had not backed up. Have I lost them? Any help please, using my laptop at present.
Thanks:cry:

Hi try booting up in "safe mode" then do a system restore choosing the last date you knew the system was ok. I can't remember which key gets you into "safe mode" f3? I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be aqlong soon.

PS don't think it's your hard drive though.::bigsmile:

Hi Dylan. The key is F8 to press just after the BIOS messages and before the Windows XP message comes up.

Treat System restore with care as , is there is a HDD fault, it will corrupt the restore and data on the disk.

Could be a Hard Disk problem or physical ram.

You say it wont boot up?

How far does it get?Did the file check complete and what errors did it flag up?

I would back up anything important now if you can get into the operating system.

DO NOT WRITE ANY MORE DATA TO THE DISK.

If there is a problem I can recover it for you as long as the disk is still spinning.:thumb:

PS I do this for a living.

Hi, started in safe mode twice now and just goes to windows xp page then goes into pale blue screen with the error after about 5 mins will not go any further. After checked all files it just hangs on that screen.
Its a great comfort that I may not have lost all last files as they are family history and my new grandsons latest photos.

Thanks AD. Latest is let it carry on until screen said "file verification completed " then it went very fast saying "sorting index xxxx from file and correcting errors"
then "deleting orphan file record segment" then"deleting index entry from index". It went through checking and deleting very fast until it said "usn journel verification" then restarted in safe mode with the message multidisk r disk partition windows system 32 / drivers xxxx sys with some (0) shapes in between the words. Now just restarts and shuts down. Its not been causing a problem before last night and virus checker AVG had been running about 10 minutes before it reverted to XP screen.
Looks like a trip to the PC menders or the recycling unit. PC is Eversham 4 years old almost.
Many thanks for your help.

Hiya Eileen,

It sounds as if the hard disk is possibly on the way out.

Is it/Has it been making and unusual noises prior to this problem?

I assume the Hard Disk is the original one.

There may be a problem with the Master File Table or boot sector on the Hard Disk.

May be physical damage.Does not sound like virus prob.

So The machine has run a checkdisk and found orphaned files etc.

Can U get the Hard disk to me?Is it SATA or IDE? and disk size please.

The error system32 file suggests there may be a driver prob but hdd cannot be ruled out.

Personally I would rather ensure the data was backed up first prior to any diagnostics.

I would only need the hard disk, not the whole PC.

Are you comfortable with removing it?

If XP won't start it may be due to a damaged boot sector or a missing or corrupt ntldr or ntdetect.com files. Given the errors you've been talking about the boot sector of the disk drive is almost certainly damaged.
Boot with the XP CD and enter the Recovery Console which will take you to a DOS window.
To repair a damaged Boot Sector at the command prompt type FIXBOOT and press Enter. Then answer "Y"

To replace damaged ntldr and ntdetect.com you can copy fresh files from the XP CD using the COPY command. At the Command Prompt type the following (where "D" is your CD-Rom drive letter) allowing the files to overwrite the old files
COPY D:\i386\NTLDR C:
COPY D:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:

If none of these work then it may be necessary to reinstall Windows. If you do it to the same directory then your data will be safe but you'd need to reinstall most of the programs.

I'll keep a eye on the forum today but we're leaving for Christmas very early tomorrow.

Best of luck

Doug

Hi Eileen

I would certainly NOT reinstall windows or reformat or your data will be lost forever. American Dream knows what he's doing - I would go with his advice; I have a similar background to his but specialise in Macs rather than PC data recovery, which he does on a daily basis as his primary job. Send your hard drive to him and he'll recover the files if its possible, but it won't be if you reinstall stuff and write to the disk.

Hope you get sorted, let us know if you need help taking the hard drive out if you decide to send it to AD, there are a number of us who could walk you through it.
