Still trying to work out who was at fault when we were abandoned in Sicily at the roadside needing breakdown help. Allianz ended up giving us compensation because their phone recordings showed their handler had mistakenly led us to believe they were sending someone out. However I have been assured by this forum and by Allianz that it was Safeguard's responsibility to do that yet they deny it.
Want to get my facts quite clear before taking them on.
Not bothered about the comp.
Want to know who to insure with next if I cant trust them.
Has anyone been helped abroad by Safeguard?

When we were flooded in Spain last year we had excellent service from Safeguard. Their breakdown service is actually AA European Breakdown and their Call centre based in France went beyond what we expected. I can't remember the exact sequence of events but we only had to ring the +33 number quoted on the card that comes with the insurance folder once, and they (AA European) took control of things and arranged recovery, hire cars etc.

Had an electrical problem down in Spain and a fuel breakdown in Germany.
Sorted out both times...
Also had quiet a big claim when a stolen car rammed into the side of our van and again all sorted by safeguard.

Never had time to fully explain yesterday.
It was our air suspension that failed and Safegaurd were very good they sent a low loader to to get us and then because it was the air suspension that failed it was not until the third garage they took us to and they were able to repair it.
There was follow up phone calls and someone on call that could translate.

So yes very pleased.

Instrument binnacle lit up like a Christmas tree just South of Carcassonne ( van went into limp home mode ) , phoned SafeGuard who said they would send a low loader out to take us to a Peugeot garage , we waited....... and waited ....... and waited , we phoned back after two hours to find that the request had never been made to send the low loader !
Four hours later the low loader arrived and took us to a garage , unloaded us and left ....... the garage said they could repair it in four days time !
Phoned SafeGuard who told us to go to Peugeot in Perpignan, they said to wait for another low loader , I decided to drive in limp mode to Perpignan .
Got to the garage in Perpignan who took 6 hours to repair the fault , drove to Carcassonne and spent three enjoyable nights there ........ started engine to begin journey home , instrument binnacle lit up like a Christmas tree .... AGAIN !
Turned engine off and on again and the fault disappeared, we drove to Caen never once turning the engine off until we parked up on the ferry !
Got fault repaired in U.K. ( new ECU )
Throughout the whole nightmare SafeGuard and their agents were absolute rubbish and made me get quite sweary at times !
I would dread having to use their services again and I mean DREAD !
No joined up infrastructure, no continuity of contact , was lied to and was left with impression that they hadn't got a clue what they were up to and didn't particularly care one iota about their customers plight .
The one plus point was that all the French people we encountered on the ground during our plight were very very kind and helpful !

Used Safeguard breakdown in Mosel. Problem was low oil pressure warning. Phoned the French number - Lady with excellent English - 30-40mins. later breakdown wagon arrived. He confirmed what I thought that I had not actually lost pressure, so escorted us under own steam to a garage about a mile away.

It was indeed a transmitter fault, but low oil pressure is not worth risking. We stayed on forecourt for night and were fixed the next day.

Good service.

Ah you phoned the French number.
That sounds like where the break in the chain came. We never had a list of international numbers. I was using the safeguard UK number. We were not given any.

Ok it appears we should indeed have called the international helpline. We rang the generic number on our key facts printout. Apparently on page two of the long policy book it gives the international numbers. Allianz UK which took my call should have put me through or at least told me to do it so they have admitted some culpability.
Moral is - print out all the docs from Safeguard or have them send you their book.

Yes we broke down in Spain a few years ago with the dreaded fuel filter leak. No problems with Safeguard they had us on the road again within a few hours with a follow up call the day after to see if we were ok. Cannot fault them
