The gearbox on my Peugeot 2.2 has problems in 3,4,5 and 6th there is a really loud whirring noise in each although 1st and 2nd are fine. This happened a few days ago so we are heading home, gently. The camper has only done 17k even though it’s six years old but I suspect a new or rebuilt these box will be needed. Has anyone had similar issues and does anyone recommender a particular repairer. I also wonder if the same issue applies with Fiat vehicles. I did call into a garage for advice and was told “they’re notorious for it. Not sure if the guy meant Peugeot or all Sevel based vehicles. I'm not sure the 2.2 is fitted in Fiats ? It might be a Ford engine.
But to fail at 17k is premature
Do you have any warranty ?
If not I'd look for a gearbox specialist near to your home town.
Wouldn't bother a main dealer

Oh Bugger. Gearbox just screaming so on to caravan club site nearby to be given bollocking by warden for not stopping and going straight to pitch we vacated an hour ago. We now have no gears and cannot move and he is really pissed off we can’t get exactly between the pitch markers. Have to bite my tounge at the moment but before we leave on the recovery truck, I hope some time today, I will be speaking to him a about his customer facing skills and if need be offering to rearrange his teeth. The most officious little twerp I have ever encountered. Having said that, his wife who booked us in while he sulked on the back office was pleasant and helpful. I think he has little man syndrome.

Check that lever on the top of the gearbox is moving whilst you are operating the gearstick inside the van. They are cable operated and can fail, become disconnected.

Well, just had a conversation with little H, I am amazed, his attitude completely changed and he was helpful even agreeing we could leave the keys with him and go home under out own steam and he would pass the keys to the recovery driver if thats what we wanted to do ::bigsmile: . What a difference, I recon the missus must have had a word with him.

He might want some spares off your MH before the recovery truck arrives! Hope you get it sorted okay seems a very low mileage to have problems. The only gearbox I've had fail was on a ford galaxy evidently they're prone to it the car had done just short of 100k though.

Are you sure it's the gearbox and not the clutch slipping badly? Seems strange it's okay in first & second but useless in the higher gears where more stress is on the clutch?

Just done a quick Google which suggests the 2014-16 models have gazebo (autocorrect) gearbox issues with 2nd or 5th (or both??). Resulting in a rebuild required. If yours had an issue in 5th that meant it was grinding a bearing down and metal started circulating the oil it could have knackered the rest. Says most present the issue before 38k miles but no info on where the data comes from.
Hope it's just a linkage, though.

Hi iandsm
I have been wracking my memory since reading your post about where is certain you tube personality got his gearbox sorted fairly recently. His gearbox failed on The M11 on the way to the tunnel, there was a sudden graunching noise and he could not use 3/4/5 or 6th gears, only 1st & second just like you have experienced.
He dragged himself off the motorway near Harlow and found a very helpful garage that fitted a new/exchange warranted gearbox, plus complete clutch & flywheel in a day.
They did however want to keep the van over 2 days so they could do a decent road test to make sure the new box & Clutch worked as they should, which they did.
The total cost was £3500 but with a warranty, and the garage did all they could to get him back on the road and ensure his van was as good as new, and he was very pleased with the result and the service provided.
It may be worth giving them a call & getting your van transported down to Harlow.
Here is the link to the garage: They specialise in commercial vehicles/vans and have all the equipment necessary to do most jobs, inc ramps & mots.
Good luck, keep us posted please.

Thanks for that very much appreciated. We should be recovered by RAC tomorrow morning but first I have to phone my local commercial garage where they do our servicing to see if they will take this job on, they do have all the ramps etc as they work on HGV's. Certainly you link may well be useful. Thanks again.. Ian

Hello, just an update, RAC phone me at 7am to check we were ok and give us the various options, we opted for recovery to our local garage who have agreed to take the job on and store the camper while they get parts. RAC have been very good but they are in the hands of recovery companies they have contracts with and it's the recovery company whose hands we are now in. Getting hard and fast time for their arrival is not proving to be easy, not the fault of the RAC though. Could be 11am, could be 1pm, or later, anyones guess. Still we have water, food and somewhere comfortable to wait. My only concern is that as the gearbox is seized in neutral will the wheels still turn for us to be loaded onto the transporter.

More than likely they will use a SPEC lift so I wouldn't worry. They won't need it in gear. Recently our van (not MH) steering lock motor siezed so steering lock was stuck, they didn't even unlock the van to recover it.

Hope all goes well with the collection of the van today, its frustrating that you cannot be given a time, even if its plus or minus an hour or so.
Do you need the van to live in while the repairs are being carried out? Sorry if I have misunderstood that part, but it was also a problem for the you tube van lifer, having to maybe find a B&B or Hotel for a couple of days while they worked on his van.
Good luck, keep us posted on what is discovered when they get the van in the workshop, hope an easy solution is found and the parts are readily available.

It’s unlikely the final drive has seized but any recovery company worth its salt will load it fine. Our 2012 Elddis 2.2 had the ford engine in so I would presume it has the box that goes with it for front wheel drive.

Thanks everyone, It now seems that the recovery companies will not take us and the camper together as they don't like passengers. They will take it separately and we will have a hire car. Only issue is we cannot be given a hire car til Tuesday 3.30 and the recovery people want to take the camper now. I told them to go away and refer to the RAC to rearrange collection for tomorrow after 3pm.

One bright spot, our local commercial garage where we have the camper serviced have quoted £2700 inc vat for a recon exchange gearbox and new clutch with 12 months warranty and booked us in for 1st August. I call that a result, also the RAC say they will pay the campsite fees few incurred for the three days delay.
