I had plans to visit Greece just before Covid got in the way. I eventually got my ferry (Bari - Igoumenitsa) refunded by Viamare and thought I’d try again in 2023. I can’t recall exactly, but I’m sure the return fare was €200+. I’ve just had a like-for-like quote but crossing via Ancona and it’s €803! Have ferry fares had a sharp hike or is it the difference between Bari & Ancona? Anybody else have experience of pricing on these routes?

I didn't know the Greek Italy ferry fares had been released yet. Just tried on Anek website and for date in June we want, it is showing camper on deck as full. I have contacted Viamare for a quote

Just spoke to Dale at Viamare. For June with a 6.7m van, 2 adults under 60 it is 592 Euros one way. And there is already limited space. It doesn't help that there seems to be no discounts for British clubs / automobile associations. I used to be a member of ADAC before they booted me out.

Northernraider is the man to speak to about last years ferry prices, I am pretty sure last time I looked was 2 years ago and the ferry from Bari to Igoumenitsa return with on deck camping was arround 800eu plus even then.
Its enough to make more people chance the 3rd party insurance and drive from Croatia through to Greece, Montenegro looks beautiful, such a shame its not easy to get comp insurance for.

Yesterday I did a booking with Viamare for 4th September ANEK /Superfast Ancona- Patras, MH Camping on Deck.

We cannot book the return yet as, much to Dale's annoyance, ANEK have not released the bookings beyond end of Sept.

I have driven through Montenegro, Bosnia, Albania before. At that time I had a green card from the CC Insurance, sadly no longer available. I really enjoyed Albania.

Not me as I never used the ferry last year I drove down through Croatia Albania to Greece and returned via Bulgaria Romania.

I used a ferry from bari to igoumenitsa oct 2020 but I can't remember the price. I returned from patras to ancona march 2021 which was around €400 I think with a pet cabin

Yea, I remember your Bari to Igoumenitsa on deck camping trip, thats why I mentioned you, as soon after Covid stopped so many things. Pretty sure it was 400eu or thereabouts each way in 2020. No surprise then that fares will have risen since then, but maybe good if the early bird discounts are still available in the new year.🤞
Cheers.

We had the same issue. Covid cancellation and price increase. We decided to explore the southern tips of Italy instead and absolutely loved it. We still might go to Greece but so glad we toured the real Italy.

Just booked Bari to Igoumenitsa, return Patras to Bari, in September. Huge discounts from Bari at the moment. Sailings from Ancona are few and far between, could not get one for September all fully booked

From last year.

Hello again, Mr Tew!

As I have said before, I cannot make up prices.

My quote was done for camping on board, on Anek’s dedicated system with the details we have on our system as per quote sent to you.

If you input the correct details (which from what I can see on the screenshot you sent me, you did not) you should get the same price as I have as we work on commission, we do NOT mark up prices.

You are welcome to book your tickets directly on the website but you will pay the difference at the port anyway if you do not book correctly.

I even did the same quote on both their website and got the same price, see below:

Ancona is a more expensive route than Bari. Bari crossings still look like what I paid in May and July 2021.

I'm just thinking of no-frills travel to Sicily by trains very soon. Motorhoming would cost 1000 pounds fuel each way and, this time, I am not really interested in the France and northern Italy I have visited so often. Just want to get straight to the south that has so far evaded me.
Any tips of what/where to do and see very welcome. :giggle:

Don't forget, when comparing Ancona prices with Bari that Bari is about 250 miles further on, or 500 miles return which will be about £125 in diesel and two days extra driving.

Be prepared for the north south divide. North much more affluent. You are likely to see a fair amount of rubbish in the street and badly maintained roads. We also came across a few dead cats left lying in the street for days. However in the main attractive towns this wasn't a problem. We were close to Sicily but we've heard some negative reports from friends who have visited the island that we decided not to go there. The places we loved the most in the south were Tropea, Termoli, Peschici, Matera. Lecce and Otranto. Here's the southern Italy section of my blog, scroll down and click on photos to make them large. Not sure of the train links to these sections would recommend the trip in a motorhome if you have the time....well worth it.

These are one way trips either Italy - Greece or vice versa.
All via Ancona / Igoumenitsa apart from the most recent which was to Bari because there wasn’t any space to Ancona during the week we wanted to travel.
We travel out in April, back in early July, out again late August and back anytime from the end of October to late November.
Last summer we drove back through the Balkans instead for a change.
Nov 21 no availability was showing plus they stop doing camping on board at the end of October so we needed a cabin, so booked with Viamare to Venice costing £639.
A couple of weeks ago I tried to book our outgoing trip for the end of April there was no availability during the week we want to, apart from Bari which we would prefer to avoid. So I contacted Viamare again who got Anek to squeeze us in on 23rd for the princely sum of £905 and a few pennies. However, this time I booked return as it’s much busier this year.

Are you saying you got a return booking for Ig- Ancona for Oct or Nov?

I am waiting for a call from Viamare to say the Anek booking system for then is open.

Geoff

Don't bother I have had a call from Dale at ViaMare and we have sorted out our return, but 3 days before we wanted it, so OUT Ancona-Patras 4th Sept and IN 20th Oct camping on deck. [Anek were showing near full but he called them and squeezed us on]

For those looking at prices it is €986.60, which surprised me for autumn, but life is too short.

Geoff
