Did it from Salzburg, stayed at Camping Nord-Sam…bus from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden (about 40mins) then local bus to Eagles Nest. We talked to a couple who camped somewhere near Berchtesgaden, but it was very expensive, busy and they needed a taxi to get to the site. There’s a small bus terminal in Berchtesgaden so maybe a route to obersalzberg?

We stayed here and walked/ cycle. Bus up to documentation centre and obersalzberg from town Or Konigsee/ Jennerbahn. Had a look under the Zum Turken hotel whilst there Been about 8 years since we were there last mind so stuff could have changed.

We stayed in parking 4 (further up the road after passing parking at the bus station for Eagles Nest. On Search 4 sites. Just a sheltered lay-by but quiet and free. Easy walk to the bus station in the morning. Try and get there before the tour busses but no point going up if cloudy.

We did some research about the campsites around Berchtesgarden, none looked good or available, and one has shocking reviews.

On advise of others, we stayed in Salzburg, as more to see and do.
The best of the local sites is Aigen, we were there last weekend.

Camping Schloss Aigen which is on the south side of Salzburg, you need a GPS to find the place as is down residential streets. But its a big field, traditional camp site, no marked pitches, you may need to double up your EHU cable, as only a few EHU posts.
They have all the facilities including a restaurant/bar which is frequented by the locals.
Central Salzburg is 15min cycle along the river.

This might be a better option for you. Stay at any campsite in Bavaria near a train station and get the Bavaria ticket for a day out to the Eagles Nest. I’ve been there a couple of time from Munich on a Bavaria ticket. There is also the option of going the extra few miles to visit Salzburg

We stayed here in 2016. We caught a bus just outside the site into “town” where we then caught another bus up to the Eagles Nest.

We stopped at the top near the bus station in a layby sort of place. We met an english couple who knew the place and showed us all the sights, We walked fdown to the hotel and visted the tunnels, stood where Hitlers house was in the woods. Stood in the SS guard box. Also went to the museum, and up to the Eagles Nest, the lift was a bit creepy. (Visit the museum BEFORE going up to the Nest)
On our way home in Ypres, we met an old dear who was on her way back there as she had a house near by the old Hitlers place, her grandparents lived there when Hitler was there early 30's. They got bombed out at the end of the war by the American Airforce, but rebuilt again after the war. She told us how her parents had come to Britain after the war, and how she had to learn english and how she was taunted at school.
Well worth a visit, but it's quite a drive up, and just as bad coming back down.
