It would appear that smoke alarms are normally fitted to the ceiling whereas carbon monoxide detectors are fitted lower down to enable them to work most efficiently; how therefore do combined smoke and carbon monoxide work?

hi, the way ive always looked at it is that carbon monoxide is approx the same density/specific gravity as air, and in the context we are interested in it it will be contained in the warm air /smoke coming off the fire and therefore like the smoke rise.. it makes sense to install it in a similar area as a smoke detector even if it isn't a combined unit..

2 Fire Angel alarms were on Which's don't buy list as they did not meet British Standard for going off in a timely manner.

In my experience as a fitter of carbon monoxide alarms was told CM is heavier than air and rises so they should be at head height when sitting in an armchair as we dealt with elderly people who could fall asleep in the chair if CM reached that height it would alarm and hopefully wake them
