My windscreen was cracked by a stone thrown up by an overtaking car. My insurance company have instructed Autoglass to replace it. Am I within my rights to insist on a genuine Carthago Bertone glass replacement. Autoglass asked me to measure the hight and width. To do this I would have to remove the cover trims. I have given them all the vehicle info including vin number. So Surely they should be able to order the correct screen. ?

There have been several posts on here that have advised that when using Autoglass for an 'A' Class to make sure it is done by their truck and bus division, because their fitters are more used to that type of screen.

This is an extract from an "older" Ageas policy (2018) so may not be the same as yours. Might help though?

What is covered?
If the windscreen or any window glass in the motorhome is broken or damaged, we will pay the cost of repairing or replacing it.
We will also pay for any repair to the bodywork that has been damaged by broken glass from the windscreen or windows.

What is not covered?
• The first £75 of any claim if the glass is replaced.
• The first £10 of any claim if the glass is repaired.
• Loss of use of the motorhome.
• Costs of importing parts or accessories or storage costs caused by delays, where the parts or accessories are not available from current stock within the geographical limits.
• Any amount over the cost shown in the manufacturer’s latest price guide, plus fitting costs, for any lost or
damaged parts or accessories if such parts or accessories are not available.
• Mechanical, electrical, electronic or computer failures or breakdowns or breakages to window, roof light or vent mechanisms.
• Loss or damage to any roof light or roof vent.
• Repair or replacement of any windscreen or window unless it is made of glass.

Yes we did on our dethleffs but you need to make sure it goes to the commercial division in Bristol. I think they want the measurements as a guide plus pictures of any markings on it.

Since 2008 & many years tugging
When I had my Hymer screen replaced I asked Autoglass for an OEM screen they were happy to comply it took 10 days to get the screen from TW.
Autoglass came and measured the screen before ordering it.
And they did a good job.

My mate Jon JonP had them fit a screen in his Carthago E Line an OEM screen would have been a few months wait so he had a non OEM screen it was fine they did a good job it was the same fitters that did mine.

Les barsteward had a non OEM screen fitted to his Carthago Compactline not only did they do a terrible job and damage the van the screen also had a ripple/bump in it.

How good a job you get comes down to the fitters.

My post on here from Sept 2022 read:-

We picked up 2 windscreen chips on our winter trip to Spain / Portugal this year. Not too bad but there were little cracks behind both so I finally decided to sort it out a couple of weeks ago. We are insured by Aviva so contacted Carglass, their partner here in France. They immediately said they don't do A Class screens so I asked Aviva who to use. They said try Mondial who have a local agent. Mondial also declined to work on an A Class so I tried Help Parebrise, the company who are partnered with the FFCC; a national club for camping car users. Help Parebrise are also specialists in windscreens for tractors, buses etc. This morning 2 men arrived with an original Pilote screen (I was offered the option of a secondary market replacement) and carried out the repair on our drive. Payment will be direct between Help Parebrise and Aviva. All communications were by email / photographs and telephone. Fortunately the contact at Help Parebrise spoke some English and plugged the gaps in my non-technical French. Begs the question "What do you do if you suffer a badly broken screen on holiday?"

It took around a week to source the screen and mine is a Pilote so likely to be easier to get than yours. They wanted a photo of the screen markings not measurements. There was a few days of further delay while they organised a team of 2 men. The eventual cost for the job was €2500 so your excess is tiny in comparison.

If you are of a delicate disposition you won't want to watch it being done. It is very crude and involves literally forcing a spike through between the bodywork and the screen then passing a wire saw through the gap to hack the screen adhesive out! There is so much potential for collateral damage.

Is it so bad you can't get back to the UK with it and have it done more locally where you have some recourse if there are problems?
