In December we have to visit an elderly relative, in a nursing home, in Carlisle.

Can anyone recommended an overnight stop within, say, 10 miles of Carlisle?

We stayed overnight at the car park just to the west of the Castle. In theory it is not allowed but seems to be tolerated or perhaps not enforced. Otherwise, there is a campsite at Dalston Hall to the south which we have used.

Haven't been there but it is only a few miles from where I was brought up - so that is (or may not be!) a recommendation. :)

Try although I haven't used it i know folk that have, its free if you have a drink or food. I have been told you should contact them in advance so worth giving them a call.

This place allows overnight also http://www.shipinnthursby.co.uk/

Many thanks. The Ship Inn looks ideal.(y)

Will give them a ring before we go and will keep the Sour Nook as a fall back.:):drink:

The Sour Nook is just down the road from where we live. There used to be a CL at the back with EHU points but I havn't seen it being used for some time. There is a large car park so that might be where the pub stop is.

I would recommend Dalston Leisure Services CL just on the City Limits on the road to Dalston. It started life as a Leisure Pool that is still in use but has developed into a caravan & MH sales site and has a lovely CL at the back with huge well spaced hard standing pitches with EHU , showers etc. It was £12 two years ago.

Search for sites is also showing the Toby Carvery on Warwick Road just off jct 43 as pub stopover.

Shame we are in Spain or you could have stopped in our yard for free.

Thanks for your information. We have booked onto the Dalton Leisure site as it seems ideally situated for our visit.:xThumb:

We took your recommendation and stayed at Dalton for our overnight.

We would recommend the site to anyone.

A large area, close cut grass like a lawn. All pitches are hard standing with EHU and water/grey water disposal.

Friendly and helpful operator. What's not to like? We will be using it again.

Thanks for the recommendation.:xgrin::xThumb:
