I have done NZ air,plus a few others, NZ air offer an In between seat,look at there schedule travelling via US. Better seating.

Last time I flew,Singapore airlines,was not to bad,very quick turn rounds.
If you do hire a van,there DOC sites are cheap,couple of dollars ,basic,and if you hire a van with toilet you can wild camp in most places.
This is not a joke!!
