It gets steadily more expensive the closer to the departure time/day you get. You can just turn up, pay and travel but it's the most expensive way of doing it. Book as far in advance as you possibly can.
If you can, have a look at the online prices and either book online, or phone them there and then and ask for the specific crossing that you've seen on the website. Should be the same price.
It should always be cheaper to book in advance than just turning up at the terminal in Calais.
If you do end up getting to the terminal without a booking, it's always cheaper to do it on line than at the desk, you can even use their wifi in the booking hall and it will be cheaper than going to the desk
Thanks for the replies, we were planning on going south from present area, Loire Atlantic, but now we're going to hang around and see how he goes but still may need to return.
Ended up getting tunnel back yesterday, 7.50am, booked through Caravan Club 2 days before, £113 including the dog.
Good job because got to parents at 12 and got called to hospital for meeting with doctor about father at 4pm to say they couldn't do any mores or him. Mother phoned at 4am too say he had passed away.
