I have been caravanning for 32 years but in 2014 I have"gone over to the dark side"
Arriving in Santander at 1815 on 2nd Nov, heading South and looking for recommendations for one night stop at an Aire or campsite close to motorway A67 within about half an hour to one and a half hours from Santander.

Current thoughts are (numbers relate to All the Aires Spain & Portugal 3rd edition):-

Aire no. 25 - Nature park Cabarceno - (by Elephant enclosure)
Aire no. 27 - Aire de Campoo
Aire no. 92 - Osorno La Mayor

Distance wise I would probably favour no.92 but am completely open to suggestions

Anyone used any of them recently? or any other suitable Aires or Campsites open in November close(ish) to the A67 within about 75 miles of Santander heading South.

Thank you in advance :)

The aire at Palencia is almost exactly 1.5 hours South of Santander.
Smashing stop, large marked bays, water, waste disposal and a short walk to the town centre with nice shops and restaurants.
Only 10 minutes off the motorway.
Also there are a couple of cheap filing stations in town - you pass one as you enter the town from the North on the left hand side.
Lidl, Aldi and Mercadona also passed on the left just after the filling station.

We really liked Palencia - the aire and the town - nice clothes and other shops so Pete might not remember it quite as fondly as me !

Hilarious evening with friends at a bar there - Jess and I both wanted a G&T so asked for 2 gins and one tonic - No entiendo ..... Un gin y tonica, y un gin solamente, Senor. As he brought the two gins and two tonics, two Spanish ladies at the next table soundly berated him for it, explaining exactly what we actually wanted in his native tongue.

Turned out he wasn't Spanish - and whatever he was, can't recall now - but none of us spoke it !

We have a favourite cafe/bar in Palencia that has wonderfully fast wifi, good tapas and cheap drinks and the bloke behind the bar is Bulgarian.
We have been stopping at Palencia on the down and back up for 7 years now and know the place well.

Never leave a campsite with your clothes line tied to a lamp post.
The elephant park is not to be missed, if not on the way out then on the way home.

I don't think we have stayed at either 27 or 92 from my records, but we did overnight at Cascante which was a nice spot.
Looking on camper contact Aguilar de Campo ( is that the same one as your Aires guide?) also gets good reviews

We've stayed at Aguilar de Campoo a couple of times. Easy walk go the town and some good walks to do in the area. It is a hard standing parking area a good night stay.

Should you be planning to go Via Madrid South, then there is a site Near Burgos. (Camping Fuente Blancas?). We have had an R-V in there OK. My Favourite though is Nr Aranjuaz. nearly 300miles further south.

Aire no. 25 - Nature park Cabarceno - (by Elephant enclosure)

Is this aire open as i have looked on campercontact and it says only open up until the 1/10. We are looking for somewhere to stay Mid December so if it is open it will be ideal, anyone?

It is a public car park and there are no barriers. I amagine it will be accessible, but the water may be turned off to avoid frost damage.

Thanks, will make it a lot easier for us knowing that. :)

Came down to southern Spain 3 weeks ago. Arrived at Santander at around 6 pm so didn't want to drive too far. I thought of Caberceno, but as it was a holiday in Spain I went to the aire at Lierganes. Nice place especially the old part. Next day headed to the one at Olmedo. I put the wrong co-ords in and ended up on the A601 south of Valladolid. Turned off at Navalmanzano on to the SG 332, through Nava de La Asuncion and a place called Coca and on to Olmedo. Glad I got lost, miles of pine trees with small buckets catching the resin and what looked like a big castle. Olmedo is quite nice, and the aire is very handy.
