Powder Coating wheels (1 Viewer)

I'm looking at getting my wheels powder coated black. No idea how it works or how long it takes.
Is it done in one day or do I have to leave my van with them?
Does anyone have an idea of the cost please.

Hi Offroamin

I wasn't under any pressure to have mine done so I took off
the nearside wheels and took them to a refurbisher and, when they
were done, I took them home and, after putting them back on,
then did the offside.

It was a case of deliver them at the start of the week and collect
them later in the same week.

Last ones that I got done were £50 per wheel, I dropped them in without tyres and took a few days.
There's another place local to me that will do them in a day, leave your car and they strip the tyres off, dip them, coat them and put the tyres on, but you do pay a premium for that service

When the diamond cut started to deteriorate I had the wheels on my towcar powder coated it took a couple of days leaving the car with them , local to me and cost £300 in 2021 price included wheel and tyre removal and re fitting and balancing. Look like new.
With a van no doubt the cost would be more but well worth a little pain imo.

I had mine done recently following damage to the rims by the tyre fitter changing my tyres. They paid for it. It was around £75/wheel in satin black. If you have Diamond Cut wheels (mix of black and silver alloys) they are around£125/ wheel. The company kept the vehicle all day and took each wheel/tyre off the motorhome. Fitted with new valves and rebalanced.
I was informed by a vehicle engineer that often a new powder coating on a wheel is better from such companies, as it is usually a thicker coating than the vehicle manufacturer uses - as they are always trying to save costs/ vehicle!

I have 3 steel wheels (4 inc spare) which are Hammerited silver and a "new" wheel which is powder-coated grey. Enquiring of a recommended Norwich company, they wanted £360 to get the 3 wheels to grey.

My son found a company in Brum who powder coat for £30 per naked wheel upto £50 if they are on the vehicle. My mate, who runs a MH coachworks company, reckons to go with the Norwich gang as £30 is unbelievable.

I think it will be a £10 tin of silver Hammerite!

I had my 4 alloys and the steel spare all powder coated at the same time, the alloys have fared really badly (flaking off), but the underslung steel wheel still looks good

I have just had two alloys damaged by tyre fitters they are diamond cut the company I used had van for thee days a did all the necessary they look great now.
cost £300 for two wheels
black circles didn’t make much profit on their tyres sale did they

Had my car done. They were diamond cut but just got powder coat graphite colour. About £350 including brake callipers and matching valves. Took about two days as the curing process takes a day. Just left the car with them. They look great. Much better than when diamond cut and are a joy to clean. Did I just say that?

If you have diamond cut wheels just bear in mind I think they can only be refinished a few times, I know that was the case with a car wheel I had done other wheels may be different but worth checking. I had my diamond cut wheels powder coated as one could not be refinished again then hit a pothole cracked the wheel and had to buy a new one £1k later I then had to pay another £125 to have it powder coated to match others Was not happy

I understand that some folk have to watch the pennies and do not have the choice but to go for the cheapest option but invariably it is not the best. I have no doubt you have got a top class finish on your wheels and are happy with the value of that.
l pay similar at the company l use and when you go to thier premises it’s not unusual to see 200/300k cars in the workshop.
You only get what you pay for.

Can I suggest you buy some poor boys wheel sealant.

You can multi layer it and makes wheel cleaning a doddle if you use a ph neutral wheel and brake cleaner.

I had a set of wheels done on my classic Impreza years ago, now sold.

Looked spot on till I sold the car 4 years later

Be sure what they are going to do. We had ours (Hymer diamond cut) painted by a mobile service several years ago and they deflated the tyre, pressed it back, sorted any damage then painted. They looked great for a couple of years then started to peel a little again, it was only £40 a wheel. They still look good, just a little paint lifting because the original lacquer finish wasn’t removed, just sanded back.
To powder coat they need to remove the tyre, and strip the original finish which costs more.
If you’re having wheels done that were originally diamond cut it’ll be quite expensive to produce the original finish. We went for all black which looks more up to date, like the latest Hymer wheels.
When we have ours redone it’ll be stripped and powder coated. I’ll also round off the edges slightly, as the diamond the cut process leaves sharp corners that the finish can’t adhere to, that’s where ours originally started to peel.

I usually drop the vehicle off before they close and pick it up at the end of the next day. I haven't used them for a few years but they charged about £320.
One minor thing to be aware of with powder coating - if you kerb the wheel, it won't scratch but you'll take a gouge out of the wheel.

Diamond cut never seems to last. I know Volkswagen had tons of warranty claims on their diamond cut alloys because they often wouldn't last two years before the finish failed and they oxidised. I think I'll just get my Fiat ones flat powder coated when they get ugly enough.
