Sorry guys but we're off to Ile de re in 4 weeks time, it's our first time in our MH in France and there are 2 or 3 things I just can't make my mind up on.
1, Do I go toll or toll free?
2, Can we stay on the main route through Rouen without a crit air sticker?
3, Will we avoid the low bridges if we stick to the main tolls?
We have quite an early sailing from Dover and we are planning a stopover in th Loire.

Any guidance will be very much appreciated.

A satnav is essential. There used to be a problem with them directing you via low tunnels but on my last trip sent it me the other side of Rouen. A bit more urban but no tunnels.
Yes, ditto. I assumed it was due to the heavy roadworks in the centre. Couldn't understand why we appeared to be en route to Dieppe but it didn't take much longer. It was a toll route. But I do now have a crit site anyway.

Since 2017. Before had caravan, folding camper and various tents.
We have a fulli toll tag. Makes paying tolls a lot easier. The toll roads are generally excellent so are worth considering.
Worth getting a Crit Air as don’t cost much and last the life of the van.

went through Rouen at start of our June trip. Has sat nav on tolls. But we are 3850Kg.

Having never driven through / round the city with a motorhome was a little apprehensive. To make matters worse, just as approaching the city the damn phone went off. This was an important business call I had been waiting for, so took it (hands free of course). Prepared to pull over if I could and needed too.

lots of roadworks being undertaken on the route. But very well signposted.

Anyway, just followed the sat nav and before I knew anything was past the city. No problem, despite the phone call.

was a very happy bunny

Can't agree with that, our satnavs, bi
both tom tom and garmin camper are usually ok but after upgrading maps ours now, tries to take us through several dead ends, farm yards and into someones front drive, and that is just getting away from the storage, if it s

we found best way in Rouen was to follow the signage for lorries, enjoy your trip

Get a Crit Air, takes10 days to arrive and less than 5 euros, then you know your OK even if you never need it.

Go which ever route your want, both are good, i've done both tbh and like both for different reasons.

Set your satnav with your vehicle measurements and you should be fine which ever route you take, noting that toll free will very likely take longer, stop/start at the roundabouts of which their seems to be 1000's.

On our very first trip through France I collared a very old chap/tugger, i'd say in his 80's, who advised me to go toll. He said the wear and tear on the vehicle, as in brakes, gear/clutch changes, fuel and him, far outwayed the cost of using non toll routes and tbh I tend to agree with him. He'd been travelling France over 60 years so had plenty of time to decide which he thought was best.

Most important is to take your time and enjoy, its the best life ever for us.

HUGE satnav tip here.......Double check the numbers you type into the co-ordinates. I got sent 20 miles beyond my destination once because one digit - out of about 16! - was wrong.

The 2 main routes through Rouen that were previously outwith the ZFE (LEZ) were incorporated into it on 1st September 2022, so you’ll need a Crit Air sticker if going that way - classes 3,4 & 5 appear to be prohibited according to this

“Since September 1, 2022, it has concerned all vehicles, including those of individuals (car, light commercial vehicle, bus, truck, etc.), with Crit'Air 4, 5 or unclassified vignettes. These vehicles will no longer be able to circulate in the area (except for specific derogations), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

I'm glad Orion pointed out that there is now a restriction on older vehicles going through Rouen. I spotted it in a thread about a month ago and it means that I can no longer take the "easy" way. When giving advice, please bear in mind that not everyone has the same options as yourselves. Les Gendarmes would probably not accept "Funsters told me to do it" as a reasonable excuse

Eight Years and 28,000 Miles.
Our 2004 Inca is definitely in the naughty zone, so it means avoiding Rouen entirely.

However there are easily traversed routes especially if travelling south using some very pleasant D roads, takes longer of course, but we never rush.

Do it toll free on maps. You will find lots of lovely places. The same sort of places that you zoom passed on the autoroute. As for the Ille de Re it is the most expensive time to go and it will be rammed with Parisians which even the French hate.

This time of year stay clear of any water. The French flock to it and their schools broke up last weekend.

Leave it blank. You should be class M2. And when you scan your V5 to send to them do it in black and white. It makes the files smaller.

A motor caravan of any weight is an M1 class vehicle, provided that it has no more than eight seats, in addition to the driver's seat.

Category M vehicles are further subdivided according to their maximum mass and number of seats. Vehicles having more than eight seats excluding the driver are either category M2 or M3 depending on whether they are up to or over 5 tonnes MAM.

When, a few years ago a fuel tanker caught fire on the bridge, that nearly all take through Rouen, we were forced to find an alternative route, the bridge actually twisted and sagged under the extreme heat. The way we found best was, around 32km before Rouen take the A29 E44 motorway towards L Harve. At junction 9 take the exit toward Yevtot on the D929 and follow signs to Pont de Brotonne, D131 and D490, after the bridge stay on the road D490 onto D913 then the D313 which is straight route from Yvetot to the A13 E46 motorway, then follow signs for whichever way you need to go, we always take the A28 E402 to Le Man's and onward. We find it so easy, about 8 miles further but often hours quicker.
