Having used actuators before they're simplicity itself. Up/down is performed by power reversal, they have built in limit switches (very useful in this case for the down position), and are simply specced for the force and travel required for the application. If using two they remain pretty well in sync with each other with any discrepancy corrected whenever they're stopped by the limit switches. Two of them operate my overcab bed (an OEM fitment). Internally a nut is spun by the motor and a threaded rod passing through the nut converts to linear motion.
