New end of March 2010
Hi All,

I have just visited my tyre garage to have my tyre pressure checked, and the guy has informed me that all four tyres on my new motorhome are wearing badly on the inner and outer rim. Considering I have travelled under 2000 miles and it is only 6weeks old it is somewhat disappointing. He has suggested I take it back to the supplier and get them to arrange a wheel alignment with Peugeot as he is concerned that something is not quite right. Has any one else experienced a similar problem my motorhome is a Elddis Autoquest 130.

Keep Smiling ::bigsmile:

Well that`s our 13th year & still loving it.
tyre wear

Phew thats some tyre scrub you have there, I would definitely be taking the motorhome back.
I have a problem with my passenger side front tyre, wearing on the outside, have done about 6000 miles all other tyres are fine, at first thought it might have been an upper ball joint as they are suspect on Merc sprinters but after having them checked they are ok.
So back to the drwaing board for me.
Hope you get your problem sorted.

If I understand you correctly, the wear you describe could be attributable to running under inflated ..

what pressures are they presently ?

inside AND outside of all four tyres is definitely under inflation.

wear on center of tyres is over inflation.

wear on inner OR outer on fronts is tracking or possible wheel bearings.

just re-read your post and I'd be changing garages if they don't know the difference between under inflation from wrong geometry.

i would expect your correct pressures to be around 60psi rear and 55psi front.

waste of time in my book.....

6 years + 5 years in boat before that
It could be that the tyre pressures where correct for an empty van but after loading up and moving in, the weight increase making the tires under inflated.

The garage says they are 69 all round but the panel on the door advises 72 front and 79 back but Marquis says that is too high. Who do you believe?

tyre wear

Have you not heard about roundabout wear, if you live in a town or near where there are plenty of roundabouts your tyres will have wear on the out side edge, this I know as fact.

well, first I would believe my eyes, if all four are worn on BOTH outside edges then it's definitely under inflation ..

Most tyre manufactures will be only too happy to advise on correct pressures.. write to them , give them your tyre size and max axle loadings , data available on vehicle vin plate

In the meantime I would inflate to the pressures given by the manufacturer 72 and 79 psi

As they said, underinflation and yes change your tyre garage as again as said they know nothing.

Re Jim above, yes go with what the vehicle says BUT check the tyres first and confirm what the max presure is, it's moulded into the tyre unually near the rim and then contact the tyre manufacturer for correct, again as above.

Forgoton who, but the wear on one side of one tyre problem, tracking, simples. I've seen it more times than I can remember were minor tracking out on one side gives just this, yes I know you'd expect even wear on both fronts but my experience is you can get this due to minor mis alignment, assuming there isn't actually a fundamental fault (ball joint etc). The other, less likely, option if camber out. Most modern vehicles this is fixed unless the vehicle had an accident or sever 'curbing' but some are adjustable but again on a newish vehicle it's unlikely to be out unless there has been a problem.

As Jim says go with the manufacturers reccomendations. Its not likley that all four tyres would be the same pressure, there is normally more weight on the front than on the back hence the lower pressure for the front.

If you want to be certain about it, take your mh to a weigh staion and have it weighed, front axle, rear axle and full van. There should be a VOSA station near you.

Contact the tyre manufacture, give them this info and they will tell you what your tyre pressures should be. There are far to many examples of garages being wrong when it comes to mh tyre pressures.

I can only reiterate what has already been said. Under inflation, and check with the manufacturer/converter.

Dealers will inflate to the 'average' which is around the 65 mark. As each motorhome is so different, pressures vary greatly. It is the same when you have a car tyre changed - most will inflate to the 'average' - which is usually around 30 ish - your car may be 28/29 but it will be set on 30 - so never assume - always check yourself!

79 psi is a heck of a lot. I've got a .pdf from somewhere (Tyre Safe?) which has 80 psi as the absolute max load on CP (specialised motorhome category) tyres.
