Wheel trim warning Ducato 16"

since 2007, 25 years tuggin before that.
We've got an X250 Ducato with 16" wheels & Had the misfortune to get a puncture ( nail). Removing the wheel trim & wheel revealed something unusual. The lugs that hold the trim off the wheel have worn & it's rubbing on the tyre as it flexes.

First thing I did when I got my van was take those covers off and fit the smaller centre covers that are secured under the wheel bolts.

We used to remove them from police cars years ago because we'd had a couple of instances of them moving at high speed and cutting through the tyre valve stem.

Plus, the sprung metal clips against the wheels are going to start corrosion after a while, and I find them just a pain in general when checking tyre pressures.
 
Are you sure your tyres are at a high enough pressure?
Are all the tyres damaged this way or was it caused by running on a slow puncture as the tyre was deflating?
 
Should have looked at your photos more closely. It appears that your wheel trims are the type held on by the wheel bolts, not a sprung wire clip. Ignore my comments about the wire clip if that is the case.

I would agree with @jezport - the tyre has most likely been run underinflated for some distance allowing the edge of the trim to rub against the tyre. More often than not, objects picked up by tyres get embedded in the tread and can remain undetected for a considerable time, the only symptom being a slow loss of pressure.

Tyres are all at 10psi above recommended pressure for these tyres at these max axle weights. Yes all wheels are the same or worse.

Only just touching the rubber by the look of it, it wouldn’t worry me too much.

75 & 80 which are 10 more than recommended.

Yes ,the fact that the plastic lugs are actually wearing the steel rim away surprised me.

Yes, reduce the air, why 10 above recommended, 60 would be plenty surely?
 
If the tyre is over-inflated that may be why the lugs have been worn away???
 
The consensus yesterday was underinflation was probably to blame. Can't see how tyre pressure can affect the trim wearing on the steel rim which is the problem. Just curious if anyone else with the same trims is seeing the same thing. The trims are not held tight by the bolts do they can move/ vibrate which is the cause of the worn lugs allowing the trim to Contact the tyre.
 
Looks like I may have the wrong wheel trims.
Apparently the wheels & trims for the Maxi are different to the normal 16" wheels.
They look the same but are different part numbers( & more expensive). I have the heavy wheels but the trims may have been fitted later & be the wrong ones. That may also explain why all the bolt covers were missing when I got it too.
