While I wait for sellers to open on Monday, I though I would ask a question of Funsters to see if anyone can help.
After an unfortunate encounter with a kerb on a badly laid out campsite, the leading side of the frame of our step is irreparably damaged.
It is a Thule 400 2012 part number 306582.
I have been searching the web and found what I think is a correct replacement frame at Leisureshopdirect but not in stock and no dates when it might be.

The Thule website lists no spares available. I have checked the websites of O’learys, Magnum and Jacksons

What is widely available is the manual slide out (whole thing for same price, or cheaper, as the replacement frame) and my question is…..would a frame from the manual version (just one side really), fit the motorised version. ?

Could you not take it to a local fabricators and see if they can make one should stealers not come up with a replacement?

Yes that would be a possibility, do you know anyone our area? It is aluminium and quite solid and detailed so might not be cost efficient for a one off piece.

Give Rose Awnings a call https://www.roseawnings.co.uk/thule-steps/
Found them very helpful when we needed to get a double step side support.

I used the foundry in Thornbury which has sadly now closed down. There is a backstreet place off of the A38 which I can ask if you have no luck.

I thought I saw an electric one for sale in classified sometime in the past fortnight, perhaps still available?

Yes, Gromett has one.

Would a 3D printed replacement be strong enough?

Snap!
i had to buy a complete step.
make sure you are sitting down when you look at the price.
if it ever happens again it will be replaced with a manual one. i expect the manual side frame is the same as the electric version. so that could be a cheaper answer.

Can I make a suggestion as we almost have the same van.

After hitting the step on numerous occasions the final straw was the Caen ferry last Oct. Last ones on and we got stuck. On the step.

Lets be honest these steps should never have been fitted as they are too low. My concern is that in hitting the step I then cause greater damage to the surrounding area.

We decided to remove the step before damage too much Wrap up the cable in a sealed bag and store zip tied out the way and use a plastic folding step that is easy to store just inside the door.

It works a treat and we have better ground clearance and cheaper than repair. The last 90 day trip to Spain had 0 clearance issues.

Try it before a costly repair (y)

Thanks but we have been using a plastic step since “the incident” and whilst it has helped, it is not great for 2 reasons. One is that it is too low for me to step forward onto, certainly last week when at Norden Farm on a slope with rear wheels chocked up. This could be resolved with a bigger step I suppose. But the second problem is that Rosie will not step onto it and it is always in the way if left out. If not left out then it is difficult to put out from the inside.
So the slide out step has been sorely missed and will be fixed or replaced.

I am waiting for Monday to ask someone if that is the case.
A bit of a bummer that we were in Poole last week and didn’t know that was where Rose Awnings is.
However a manual version complete is cheaper than just the spare frame listed so I suspect they are not the same.

Sorry to say this but I doubt anyone will be able to straighten it out and still have the step slide as it's more or less a friction fit.

Yes, I am fully prepared to get a new frame, just seems not available. We will have a few goes at it before succumbing to a whole new step!

Hi

I wrecked my Thule slide out step on my Malibu boarding a Dover Calais ferry when my step hit one of the little "fingers" on the end of the boarding ramp which was sticking up. I ending up buying a complete new step. I kept the old one as I thought it might be useful to someone in the future (y).

I've had a look at my side pieces and the one I have labled "A" is fairly straight but would need a little fettling. The other labled "B" is more mis-shaped but could also be probably fettled, any use to you?

Cheers

Trevor

Thank you both.
John has spent the day fettling and we do have a working step with a bit of a grinding noise which John hopes is due to sand and dirt as the step has been manhandled on its side for him to take apart. Tomorrow he is going to try and clean it up and see where we are. At present just operating it on its side as haven’t disconnected the wiring from it, we just pulled the fuse.
I might come back to you Treeeev as your side A looks to be the side we damaged? Does your Malibu have an offside sliding door?
Edit: As it happens, my son-in-law will be driving his Mum home from here to Billericay at the end of next week so if you are willing to part with the sides (not expecting for free of course) we could ask him to pick up?
MisterB, will keep your option ready as fall back if you wish to sell it.

Hi Annie

My Malibu did have an offside sliding door, I’ve since px’d it for another van. Sounds like a plan as Billericay is just up the road from me👍. I’ll send you a pm with my contact details

Cheers

Just what we have done. The Thule electric ones are always failing.

Just a thought but have you contacted Thule. I have had excellent service direct from the factory regarding a tow bar mounted bike rack. They mailed me a complete bike rack and told me to use what I needed and return the rest.

Truly excellent service

As it was the weekend I just searched their website and it said no spares available but it would have been a course of action if all other leads failed.
